Since you guys and girls are all grown up and stuff, I figure you may be able to help. I need to take a job where I work as little as possible and make the most money. I neeed to have time for class (started back at school and am overloading from stress) and need to be able to afford rent/girlfriends. Any ideas?
p.s. I hate the spam filter :-( I have to retype all of my posts because I'm an idiot and forget to click no. |

Willow will assure you that I bitched about it everyday, but I will tell you that UPS is a great job for students. It is very phyisically demanding and even though it doesn't take much brainpower, you will wear your mind out wondering how in the hell some decisions get made. It gets very cold in the winter time and it gets very very hot in the summer. I'm talking about not being able to to feel the box you're picking up because your hands are numb cold and drinking 2 gallons of water in 4 hours, clothes completely soaked with sweat hot. There are about 4 months out of the year when it's actually comfortable but you sweat year round unless you're lazy (or maybe I just sweat a lot). That being said, starting pay is (or at least was) $8.50 / hour, and you can get up to $9.50 pretty quick (about a month) if you memorze a sorting chart. Overtime is time and a half and goes into effect after 5 hours in a single day. Meaning overtime is not calculated per week, it is "componded daily" so to speak. The best part is full time students can get up to $2000 tuition reimbursement (pass the class) tax free per year. Think of it as a ~15% untaxed bonus. If you want easier work than loading/unloading, memorize that chart and you can sort. They don't get in trouble for sending packages to the wrong place (one of my biggest pet peeves about UPS) and I'd say its easier and much less mind numbing. You get a $0.50 raise per year (whoop) and occasionally (twice in my 3 year time there) they will do a company wide raise for the hell of it. After one year you get a week vacation, after two years, two weeks, but it stops there until you get like 5 or 10 years. After 1 month (I think) you get full medical (I'm talking 100% coverage with $25 copay, the best medical I've ever had) and after 3 months you get full dental and vision, plus your wife/kids are covered as well. I think the vacation days (paid) were New Years Day, New Years Eve, Easter Monday, Labor Day, July 4th, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Day. You also get Christmas Eve, but you don't get paid for it because drivers have to work and thats their policy. When I left, I was making $11 / hour, had 2 weeks vacation plus 10 personal days (for a total of 4 weeks off), got my wisdom teeth cut out for free, and I was in the best shape of my life (that has changed a bit since I quit :) If you are still interested after hearing all that, I will add that if you don't want to stay there at least a year, don't bother with it because its not worth it to you or them. If you have any interest in management, it may be worth it. You can be a part time manager in a year or less, but they don't get paid a lot more than hourly folks and you have to work more especially in the holiday season. If you have any interest in driving the truck, prepare to load/sort/manage/whatever for 3-5 years as there is a long line for that job. If you decide you like driving around town for 8-12 hours a day, you can make close to 6 figures after 20 years or so. I'm not sure how that scales up but starting pay for full time drives was around $25 / hour when I was there. Drivers always get overtime and the union keeps everything in order. Don't do it for the money though, because really that job pissed me off more than any other job by far, even though it was a good experience. You won't have an abundance of free time since the shifts run M-F and are 4-5 hours long. I worked the twilight shift which ran from ~ 5:30 or 6 to ~10. The shift times change as the volume changes, around late December it got to be from like 3:30 to 10:30, but they were flexible with the earlier times if you had class. That is a mouthfull and probably too much information, but that is UPS in a (fairly large) nutshell. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR QUEST! |

Lowe's (home improvement) is good - the pay and benefits are comparable to UPS (I think you actually start at around $9-10 per hour). My brother works there and it also has put him in good shape (though if you don't want to work the floor, you can be a cashier). Also, internships often pay well, have flexible hours, and give good experience (and sometimes don't have much to do). |

I have to agree about lowes. Also, if you still want to do some salesy stuff, you can try to get in a department like Doors & Windows where there are lots of special orders. You get a decent commission for every special order you put in, so that could really boost your income. |

After close consideration I have decided to start my own escort service. Those who are interested in making a little extra cash on the side, let me know. I offer full benefits (if you get beat by the buyer then I'll make sure they're taken care of) etc.. But really, thanks for all the awesome suggestions. I'm meeting with our regional tomorrow to discuss. I need to quit being a baby and man up. :-) |

I used to work construction over the summers. It sucked. I don't recommend it. My easiest job was working at the student center; I got to sit on my ass, use the internet, and do my homework all the time. That was basically how I was able to update this page like 3 times a week back in the day. However, I only got like $200 a month out of it. I guess I don't have any good suggestions. |
