Yes, we're still alive

By
January 6th, 2003

It's been quite some time since either of us has posted anything. No "Merry Christmas wishes" or "Happy New Years". Willow is out of the country, but I have a load of worthless excuses... Be prepared:

Work was really busy during Christmas, and I was never in a good enough mood to post anything worth reading (have we even done that yet?). I had to do a lot of driving for the holidays and spent little time on the computer. The time I did spend was on something unrelated to the site. I do have a recipe coming up for some awesome chicken pizza, but I must say that the chicken alone would be just as yummy. I'll try to get it up soon, but it's not my recipe and I can't remember the ingredients for the marinade.

Don't worry loyal readers, Willow will be back in a couple of days to fill your screen with more useless rambling. Be patient.

Reality sets in

By Mike Daly
January 8th, 2003

Well, I have finally returned from my holiday adventures, and ... well, ... I don't really have anything new to say. I was thinking of writing another reflection on modern classics concerning final fantasy, but that's a lot of work and I have two new games to play, so don't expect it anytime soon. Other than that, the IGDA had another meeting last night. It was great. Um... I'm bored of writing, piss off.

The physics of slack

By Mike Daly
January 13th, 2003

As some of you may have noted, I had a very stressful end of the semester a little while ago. Right after that, I went on one continuous vacation that was densely packed with activities. Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome vacation, but I didn't get any rest or relaxation. Then I got back in the country, got back in town, went to a meeting, and classes were already upon me the next day.

Then I had a four day weekend. This was my first real chance to relax in probably over a month. I was very relaxed. Too relaxed. I knew I had homework and other stuff to do, but I was too relaxed to care. I ended up not doing my homework (sue me), in addition to not doing anything else, updating this webpage included. So my theory is that lack of a force of tension (slack) has inertia. Once it gets moving (err, not moving?), it doesn't stop until sufficient force is applied to it. Well, I can say that for now, I have delayed my slackness just enough to write a sizeable amount of update to this page!

God what a waste of time writing that was! It's not even meaningfull. I can't imagine how you feel. Ha ha, the sadism of wasting your time makes me feel like it was all worth it after all.

On one last note, I will try to get some more articles out your way soon. I'm debating whether to write my opinions on Final Fantasy as a Reflection on modern classics, or just an extremely cynical game review.

go on, piss off.

The monkeys are coming!

By Mike Daly
January 16th, 2003

This semester's schedule seems to be pretty slack, which is a radical change from last, one which was desperately needed. Anyway, because of that, hopefully I will find time to do some cool webpage stuff.

The first of these things I found myself doing was creating a little icon for the webpage. I wanted it to be curvy, but getting photoshop to cooperate was a pain, so I ended up scanning the sketch I did in class and using it. Unfortunately, it turned out a little rough. I will have to re-work that later. If I can get my hands on 3D Studio Max any time soon, I will create a nifty intro logo animation. Cool, huh?

In other news, because of my free time, I am trying to play with all the stuff I got for christmas, like my drafting table for drawing, Splinter Cell, Onimusha (I got that one for myself), and Unreal Tournament 2003. I was hoping to develop some stuff for UT, but the editor refuses to work on my computer. Additionally, I don't have 3D Studio Max, so I can't work on character models or static meshes either.

Finally Finished Final Fantasy (phew!)

By Mike Daly
January 22nd, 2003

Well, at least for the first week or so of my new slacker schedule, I have put my time to good use. I wrote an all new Reflection on Modern Classics, and additionally created a comic to accompany it. You may be pleased to view it here

On another note, as soon as my brother accepts an alias, I'm going to make him an e-mail address from this address, and he has expressed interest in contributing to the page some. What this means for me is that I get to create a new comic character for him, yay!

In other news, Wayne finally got around to writing his own article: a game review of the very classic Rareware title Donkey Kong Country. Good job. And on one final note, I am a slacker.

Reluctant return to reflecting on ridiculous rubbish!

By Mike Daly
January 26th, 2003

I'd just to take a moment to complain about how hard it is to write an article on Final Fantasy that is legible and, more difficult, free of many vulgar obseneties. It's kind of like saying something ridiculously funny while keeping a strait face - it's tough. I hope you appreciate how much mental effort I go through to bring you articles that give the impression that i'm jovially looking back at my past mistakes and laughing at them, as opposed to revealing my true burning black heart concerning the subject. Whining like that is what the rest of the internet is for. Although most of you probably already know how full of hatred I already am anyway.

Anyway, in an amazing feat of self-control I have created another intellectually crisp and refreshing reflection on modern classics concerning nothing other than the infamous Final Fantasy VIII ... again. I may actually return a third time because I have not even gotten the horse to proverbial 'critical condition' by my repeated beatings. Anyway, enjoy my pointless ramblings about something history will eventually forget anyway.

By the way, I should have it's comic done soon as well.

Return to glory

By Mike Daly
January 27th, 2003

Well, after much trial and tribulation, I have finally gotten my black, wirey, tentacle-like, fingers on a copy of 3D Studio Max. When it rains, it pours. The version I got happened to be 5, and coincidentally, I got it from 3 independant sources all in the same day. My friends finally got it, and gave me a burned disc, I finally finished downloading it on kazaa (took like a week), and I found where Jody had put it in his shared files.

Anyway, I was going to work on the comic for final fantasy VIII, or work on my little movie-project, but I had to see if I still had it as far as max was concerned. When I started out, I was kind of intimidated because I couldn't think of an easy way to get done what I was thinking of doing. But after I started popping primitives on there, it all came back to me. Yes, the magic has returned, and now I can create anything imaginable (assuming unimaginable timespan). I made a couple quick models for my kick-booty mimesis class, and imported them into the UT 2003 engine.

I made a couple screenshots of what they look like in-game on a computer with VERY Crappy video settings. Additionally, I didn't bother making a texture for the lamp, so it looks like a big block of raw aluminum right now. Anyway, check these out if you are bored. If you take a look at the weapon, you can see how bad the video settings are, so don't take it out on me.

So now you know my excuse for taking longer getting the next comic up, but at least I gave you something to look at. I'll try to do some work tommorow... really, I will!

*edit* I made this post at 4 in the morning last night, so it counts as today, so I'm changing it's date to yesterday so todays post can be at the top. Now piss off.

Trials and Tribulations

By Mike Daly
January 28th, 2003

I got home today at 6:45 pm. I am supposed to get off of work at 5:00 pm. In case you didn't notice, there is a slight descrepancy here. Suprisingly enough, only about 77% of this tardyness is due to the CAT bus.

While I was at work, I was asked to stay after to help because the night shift employees were almost all in a meeting. I did thid thinking that I would get off in time to catch the 5:25 CAT bus, but as fate had it, I was released almost exactly at 5:25. Knowing that I had to get my stuff out of the office, I figured that I didn't want to rely on the CAT bus being late, so I might as well take my time and get a chance to chat with my coworkers. I head over to the bus stop at 5:45 because the next bus stop was scheduled for 5:55 and I didn't want to miss it.

It was raining, by the way. So I waited and waited and waited and waited and waited. I'm not sure if the bus ever came and the next one was a couple minutes early or if the bus was actually 25 minutes late. Either way, I was very frustrated. After a slow drive through traffic, and a short walk through the rain to get to my house, I finally had arrived home. At 6:45, in case you've forgotten. I was supposed to get off of work at 5:00.

I just felt like sharing that with you guys, but now it has made me grumpy. Piss off.

the internet makes you stupid

By Mike Daly
January 29th, 2003

Well, it's 6:37 am right now and I haven't really gotten any sleep, but I'm not really tired. This sort of unfortunate scenario happens when I have a) homework and b) anything at all else to do (including but not limited to staring at the wall, and watching the carpet peel). This means that I will do ANYTHING else short of inflicting massive self injury to put off doing homework. This could be a good thing because it might motivate me to draw or play with my nifty computer programs like photoshop or 3d studio max, but in this case it hasn't. Especially no thanks to Jake, I came across some crazy site that has a bunch of flash stuff to watch. I especially enjoyed the e-mail section. Additionally, I recently came across another crazy site! Which also has cool flash stuffs. I said that I would work more on stuff that I could post online, but I suck, so I haven't. I guess instead, I can post up a picture I did like 1000 years ago (well 3 years ago if you are carbon-dating (no, wait carbon dating is innacurate at small time intervals fool!), I mean computer dating websites (no fool! you are making it worse!), I mean I don't have ANY dates! (doh! bad Mike... I mean Willow! damn damn), i mean ... 3 ... years)

Yeah so anyway... Here it is. It's like really old though. I did it with max back when I was in high school. Now you have a pretty picture to look at, piss off.

Damn, but if I finish this post, I will be absolutely out of things to do. I wonder if anyone has sent me e-mail since 4 am? Hold on, I'll check.

...

Well, I got 26 in the junk mail folder. At least somebody cares enough to dump all their crap on me.

Peek at another dimension

By Mike Daly
February 2nd, 2003

Well, Wayne recently helped me aquire a drawing tablet. In case you know not what they are, it's an interface device with you computer where it puts the mouse cursor wherever you put your pen on a pad. This is helpful for drawing and coloring things in photoshop, which, in case you haven't noticed, I'm rather fond of. Wacom makes the best, but they are expensive. I'd have to pay about $350 to get a decent, but very small one.

To make a long story short, mine is a $24 piece of crap. It has issues that make it very frustrating and limiting. However, i am beggining to see it's advantages that simply can't be done with just a mouse. So, I've enjoyed it so far. Without any new art handy to color as a test, I shuffled through the random papers on my desk, and came across this concept sketch for the character of Willow for this webpage. I decided it didn't really fit me well, so I didn't use it, but it was fun to digitally ink and color. Here is the final result of my toil. The most apparent place where you can see the pressure sensetivity advantage is in the background, but it came in pretty handy throughout.

In other news, I've been working on building a city level in Unreal Tournament 2003 for an AI research presentation. It's a lot of fun, and I've been making a lot of progress, but I'm not very far yet. I'll make and post some screenshots when I'm further.

Peace out, and piss off.

I need a good slap on the wrist

By Mike Daly
February 5th, 2003

I seem to recall posting that I was actually going to try to do some work that was postable a couple days ago. Let it finally be known then that this ... was a blatant lie.

However, I haven't spent all this time totally idle. I've been working on a map for this cool AI presentation in Australia in the UT 2K3 engine. My job is to make a good looking city bank thing. Well, it's not looking too good, but a little (/lot) more believable than the map they've currently got. Anyway, so any of youse don't feel abandonned, I will post up some screenshots fors ya. Here yas go:

Bank 1
Bank 2
Bank 3
Bank 4
Bank 5
Bank 6
Bank 7
Bank 8

Well, now you have some pixels to look at before you move on with your usual web-"surfing" routine (I hate the word "surfing", it sounds so corny by now), which should include no less than Penny Arcade, IGN, 8-bit theater, some random messageboard, and of course some totally useless site. by the way, I post as WillowMonkey on the aforementioned messageboard, although I'm sure none of you give a *poop*.

Below are links for the master only, so that I don't have to type in the whole damn webaddress to download them. If you follow the link, you will be following it to your death.

Bank level
Texture package
Static meshes

PS - Jamstudio graphics tablet sucks.

Peace out. Death to Final Fantasy.

New Old Food

By Mike Daly
February 6th, 2003

Hey folks. Wayne did a little bit of that behind the curtain wizard of oz magic on our webpage and got the page separation stuff working for our food lists. I'd like to say that we haven't added any foods because it would screw up the viewer, but really, we've just been lazy.

Anyhow, we just remedied that. We've got an oldie but goldie, Spaghetti along with everybodies favorite Garlic Bread. Don't take this to mean that we think someone on earth still doesn't know how to make spaghetti, but you can see it on the list so you might remember to make it every once in a while in case you can't think of anything.

I was gonna draw a lot today, but as it turns out, when you don't get any sleep, you have a tendancy to pass out without noticing it. This is what happened to me today until Wayne woke me up when he got back from working at the unnamed shipping company. The rest of the time I spent repeatedly checking my e-mail, talking with Wayne, and of course cooking and consuming dinner.

Can't promise anything for tommorow, or the following days for that matter, it's friday and I don't hear the productivity fairy flying down my chimney.

Update just for the sake of updates

By Mike Daly
February 11th, 2003

Howdy folks. Have you ever noticed on peoples websites, where they say they are going to update regularly, then the don't and they miss like a whole week, then they say "it's because I've been really busy at work" or some sort of crap like that? I hate that.

Anyhow, I haven't updated this site in quite a while mainly because I've been really busy at work.

...

Who am I kidding? I don't do work. The real reason is that I just haven't had anything interesting to post. I haven't worked on the bank or any digital art in the past few days. I have, however done some other interesting things. First off, I don't know if I told you about my little non-animated animated movie, but I finished a couple frames of that.

Additionally, I have actually been playing some games. I haven't done it in a pretty long time, so this is notable. I recently beat Splinter Cell, a very challenging and often frustrating game. Additionally, I beat Panzer Dragoon for the fourth time. Hmm... I should write reviews of these. I think I'll do that now.

On one last note, for some reason, last night I had a surge of interest in composing music. I think I just might try and make some time to do that soon. That will be good motivation to get the 'cool stuff' section up and running.

Ha! I did some work at work

By Mike Daly
February 11th, 2003

When it rains, it pours. So I had to sit at the information desk for a significant portion of my job today. This means that I sit in front of a computer answering a phone with some contrived question about the university once about every 15 minues. This leaves a lot of time to do other stuff, and saying as I already exhausted the entire internet, I thought I might add some stuff to the site.

At first, it was just an update, but I realized I had more time on my hands, so I wrote 3 game reviews. I was on a roll. Anyway, in case you were wondering about these specific Xbox titles, check out Splinter Cell, Panzer Dragoon, and Genma Onimusha.

The Monkeys are coming

By Mike Daly
February 16th, 2003

Howdy folks. I just wasted an entire weekend doing nothing meaningful (that's news). I got Capcom vs. SNK 2 and played that a lot, and got to do some serious hanging out with chums. Feeling a little slothful, I thought about what I could do tonight to make up for it. As another ice storm hits us and I probably won't have to go to school tommorow, I figure I can get something done.

So here's my thought. There is a guy I know who is a secret agent in europe. He recently infiltrated the Hungarian government stealing vital information for our countries biochemistry industry. He is now operating out of France catching up on all the paperwork involved in the spy stuff. Anyhow, he was involved in a high-speed car chase over christmas break and asked the infamous staff of a prestigious webpage to create a rendered mock up of the car crash involved.

So, in the next few weeks, I will be involved in the production of this film. The screenplay has already been written and the actors cast. Filming should start any day. One setback I realized, however, was that our film division does not yet have an intro logo animation. This is something that desperately needed to be corrected, therefore, I have spend a little while playing with it, and have begun to create something worthy of note.

The animation is rendering as I type, I'll post again when it's done to show you all. Look for the full length feature film within the coming weeks.

the monkeys have come

By Mike Daly
February 16th, 2003

There is good news and there is bad news. I usually start with the bad, but it's based off the good, so putting it first would put it out of context. Therefore, without futher ado, I present to you:

The Dueling Monkeys Intro Movie
but that one has crappy quality. If you have a good connection give this one a shot. It's a lot better.

Now for the bad news. In case you haven't figured out for yourself by clicking on the links, these are windows media files. A format I am principally opposed to. However, I didn't have any other option because that's the only format that windows movie maker (free with XP) can save to. I would convert it with my other video program, but it won't even recognize wmv files. This thing can load a photoshop file and let you pick which layer you want to use and you can't import a wmv file? I hate that.

So yes, if you can't see my pretty movies or your browser tries to do that stupid integrated media player crap, I truly am sorry. I would have liked you to get the optimal viewing experience out of my intro just as much as you do.

Now I just have to get my tentacles on a digital camcorder and I'll be set for the major production.

Willow, Willow, relax

By
February 16th, 2003

If you haven't noticed, Willow likes to post about as much as I like to complain about work. If he would ask, "Hey Wayne, is there a way to convert a wmv to mpeg?" I'd say, "probably, I found a tool that converts wma to mp3 the other day, why don't you try this handy site." But no, Willow's first thoughts are, "I'll go whine about it to all 3 of my readers."

Ok, ok, I'm being a bit harsh. This was really just leading up to me rubbing in the fact that it was sleeting all night and Willow had to ride the CAT bus to work today, while all but one of my classes was cancelled per order the teacher (by the way, the roads are slick you retards who only delayed classes) and I just don't ride the CAT bus for one class.

Ok, back to bed for me

Once in a blue moon

By Mike Daly
February 17th, 2003

It's not too often nowadays I do art just for art's sake. But today, I did just that. I'm getting a little faster I think. This one only took me a couple hours from concept to completion.

In case anyone is wondering what I look like in real life, I can assure you I look exactly like this. Yeah, I'm cool.

Behind the iron curtain, the industrial strength web-machine I like to call 'Wayne' has been slaving away at some code, and it sould only be a matter of months before the galleries are finally up and running.

A digital camcorder has been secured for the filming of "the Crash" (tenative title).

And one last thing, I finally cancelled my cell phone subscription this morning. I hate that thing.

Galleries at last!

By Mike Daly
February 22nd, 2003

After much time and toil, we have finally programmed the galleries to be beautiful, dynamic, wonderful things. Thanks to the brilliant way in which they were designed, it is pretty easy to make new gallerys, so expect me to post lots of crap like pictures of my feet when I am bored.

Other than that, I redrew our character icons on the about us page, but they turned out crappier than the ones before. The most notable addition here is the presence of a new site contributor. Everybody give a big welcome to Wesley Monkey. You can read all about him at about us, except that I wrote all that stuff and not him, so it doesn't make any sense. Sorry. I'll be hard at work trying to get him to write an article for us.

A is for apple, B is for bird, D is for stupid

By Mike Daly
February 24th, 2003

Probably the only thing that I learned from chemistry is that some things don't mix well. Over the course of my life I have, in fact, encountered things with just this relationship. Oil and water, girls and video games, salt & vinegar and chips, etc. Now I have another thing to add to the list: homework and webcomics. It is my theory that if one exists than the other does not. Which one exists is a function of who you are. There are two cases here. First case: you are someone who intends on finishing college, in this case you will deny the existence of webcomics until your homework ceases to exist. Second case: you are me, as long as there is an unread webcomic, no homework can be done.

I don't think it displays a time of posting here, but I'll go ahead and tell you that it's 4:27 here. Why is it that EVERY time I've been assigned homework this semester, I've pulled an all-nighter the night before it was due? In addition to this, I didn't even do homework during the all-nighters, I just PROCRASTINATED from doing homework. Finally, at about one hour before I have to leave (two hours before class, thanks CAT), I start and don't finish and fail.

TEH END.

Pictures of my feet at last!

Howdy folks. As it turns out, all that homework I stayed up all last night trying to procrastinate from wasn't due at all. It didn't even exist. Oops.

Anyway, I have been playing with pictures, and because it is so easy to add stuff to the galleries, I have been adding like the count (*thunder crashes*)

Cool Stuff is where you will find links to all the galleries. The 'pictures' gallery were mostly taken with my crappy camera, so they suck. Sorry. Anyway, enjoy. I suppose it would be a good idea to get some sleep eventually as I haven't had any in a long time and it's already 4:24 am.

Desperate plead for feedback

By Mike Daly
February 25th, 2003

Hey everyone. If there is anyone on earth out there that reads this website, I'd like to hear from you. I know you exist, the webalizer tells me you do.

Here is the deal. I've come to realize that the section headings 'our two cents' and 'cool stuff' are fairly misrepresentative of what those sections actually contain. First off, 'our two cents' just isn't really an interesting title, and nobody goes to it. Who cares about our two cents anyway? Try to think of suggestions for a new name, maybe something like 'totally awesome stuff'. This leads me to the next point: 'cool stuff' is a crappy title because the whole page is cool stuff. It wouldn't be very navigatable if each section was named 'cool stuff' though, so we need to find a more descriptive heading, maybe 'pictures and other meaningless crap'. No, that's a bad idea. See? This is why I need your help.

If you have any suggestions, seriously, any at all, e-mail them to comments@duelingmonkeys.com. Heck, you don't even have to have suggestions, I would be perfectly happy getting e-mails like 'hey, you are the coolest site on the intarnet!!!1' or 'WTF U guys need 2 RTFM!!! LOL!!! ROTFL!! U got 0WN3D!!!' or 'Michael, this is your mother, you need to come home this weekend and do your taxes.'

Secrets of the intarnet EXPOSED!

By Mike Daly
February 25th, 2003

It's time to celebrate! Today, our website passed the milestone of 100,000 hits! Woo-hoo! we are the bombX0R.

However, I'd like to take this celebration post to explain a well-kept internet secret. The administrators of most websites definately don't want you (or the people that advertise there) to know this. HITS ARE ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS. Have 100,000 people gone to our site? no. Does anyone go to our site? no. Wayne and I probably caused all of those hits ourselves. Have we gone to the site 100,000 times? Hell no. Each time someone visits here, it might cause up to 100 hits just because each hit is a request for a bit of information. That means the dynamic database and all our pretty pictures and stuff give us a rediculus amout of hits. Now that the galleries are up, that will probably increase even more. So just so you know, when people say how many hits they get, the are full of it, nobody visits their crappy page.

Keep that a secret though, because advertisers might not know that, and it'd be pretty sweet to tell some dolt that they need to pay us a ton to put up an ad when we have 100,000 hits. Plus, it's a big number and fuels my deflated ego.

Contratulations! And welcome to Stupid Inc.

By Mike Daly
February 26th, 2003

I am an idiot. This is undeniable. If any of you are not thoroughly convinced of that by now, let me tell you a little story.

Once upon a time, there was this guy, his name might have been Willow, but it also might have been Mike. After a semester of grueling work and misery, he decided to reward himself with a semester of ease, hobbies and relaxation. During this semester, he stops doing homework. Apparently he forgets how it is done. Each and every time a homework assignment is due, he stays up the entire night before busily NOT doing it. Then he FAILS OUT OF COLLEGE!

TEH END

Let me relate to you my sleeping schedule:
Monday night: no sleep (procrastinating from imaginary homework)
Tuesday night: 5 am - 10 am (I have no idea why I stayed up that late, it was a little fuzzy.)
Wednesday night (now): no sleep (I actually have a real homework due tommorow, but I haven't started yet)
Thursday night: Don't know yet, but as I have an Operating systems program due friday, it's not looking good.
Friday night: most likely no sleep. I feel that sleeping on Friday is almost as bad as waking up on Sunday.

For your information: current time: 6:45 am

Additionally, last night, Wayne and I held a sort of cookout, and we had some EXCELLENT food. Not just that, but almost all of it is food that is not already in our database, so be expecting some good stuff soon.

And on one final note, I didn't go to bed last night again. That makes 3 times in a week, a new record, I think.

So I got an email requesting that for the lazies out there we have an online feedback form so you don't have to load up a program just to tell us we suck. Also this way its anonymous.

Anyway, thats done. Please tell us something, so far this place is where Willow and I seem to just tell eachother whats going on in our lives, even though he's 20 feet from me right now.

I got 2 of the 4 foods we cooked up last night up, but I don't think I'll add sweet potatoes or baked beans. They're pretty simple and self explanatory, but that doesn't take away from the level of satisfaction my taste bud's enjoyed. I did post Shishkabobs and Roasted Corn on the Cob though, both were superlicious. There's even a picture of the kabobs.

Oh yeah, one last thing: I added a new field to the food descriptions called Svg (for servings) so you can see how many people you're feeding. We'll have to go through and change each one, so be patient and ignore the ones that say it serves zero people

this post has nothing to do with 'Statistical Inferences'

March 4th, 2003

After getting the galleries up and scanning some old pictures of friends, I was thinking about the good ol' days, and coincidentally, I got a call from my old high school roomate. He was in town and decided to hang out for a few days. Even with the short notice, I managed to throw together a get-together at Chapel Hill. I got to see lots of old friends, but only remembered later that I should have taken some pictures. Oh well, perhaps I can use that as an excuse to visit again. I had a great time, thanks guys.

Anyway, I guess this is my version of an excuse for not doing anything that can be shown. Because I haven't done anything showable recently, I decided to take some time at work to write a game review on a game I believe needs mentioning. Check out Mechassault if you are so inclined.

Additionally, our server will be down on saturday for some time. I don't know when, but in case you are trying to view our page (yeah, right) and it doesn't show up, you know why. The reason is that the server our hosting company uses is getting upgraded, so now our page should be even faster, woo-hoo! Um... no wait. Wayne actually tells me that the server was upgraded last saturday and that I am an idiot. He is correct on both arguments.

Oh yeah, I am going to Japan for spring break, so don't expect me to post anything for a while, I'll see if I can get Wayne to make an update or two. However, you can expect a boatload of pictures when I get back.

March 5th, 2003

I think that I should make a regular section of articles whenever this happens, for some reason when I'm looking for things to do to keep from having to do my homework and I've exhausted every flash site on the entire internet, I just feel like writing an update, I don't know why.

Anyway, I was thinking this section could have links and critiques of all the flash sites/webcomics I came across during my all-night journey in circles around the net. Oh yeah, by the way, it's 6:58 am and I haven't started my homework yet. I guess I should start soon, I'm sitting here listening to the cool tunes of Guitar Vader, and I'm feeling the effects of the ritalin kick in.

Oh well, during the daytime hours when you are all bored at work or wherever and I'm asleep in class, you can no doubt entertain yourselfs with this flash website as well as my next item. But before presenting you with the golden link, i must say that this is the one of the coolest games I've ever played, it's another skifree at last, but with the powerpuff girls - the best cartoon characters EVER! Anyway, check the fast and the flurrious out. It's great.

Some of the best flash stuff I've seen has come from television station's webpages, which is interesting, apparently people do a better job when they are getting paid. Anywho, good morning, don't let the, uh, ... chair-bugs bite.

Wayne and his Desert Eagle .50

By Mike Daly
March 7th, 2003

A short while back, I did a comic-book style action picture of myself which was very cool. Just to round out the gallery, I did a little art tonight and made one for Wayne. Unlike mine, I can assure you that this does not look very much like Wayne in real life. Except for perhaps the anger and the handgun. Hope you enjoy.

I kind of got bored part of the way through this one and tried to go all fast, and it has taken it's toll. But after I finished all the highlights, it's just hard to think about where you can go back to to change and improve without starting parts over. Even being brisk, it still took about 4 hours from pose idea to posting.

As an extra bonus, I decided to put the two pictures together. This only took about 10 minutes. Awe at the Dueling Monkeys!

Anyway, I'd like to take a moment to congratulate myself on the site's 50th update! Saying as we've only been around for a couple months, I'd say that's a pretty good rate. In honor, I was going to make a new icon for the top left pose/cool-thing picture. But I really don't feel like doing that now. 50 posts may seem like it doesn't have any meaning, but I assure you that it has more meaning than celebrating 100,000 hits. Plus, I need more things to celebrate.

Spring Break

By
March 9th, 2003

Early this morning Willow got on his plane to Japan to visit (newcomer) Wesley in Japan. Sounds like a fun trip doesn't it? Yeah, it looks like this will be a good spring break.

If by good you mean, stuck in nofunland all by yourself because of work, then yes, it's a great spring break. That's the predicament I'm faced with. I went to the beach this past weekend, only to return to a normal week (minus class). It only makes it worse to know that 90 percent of all college students are anywhere but here having fun. Especially when your friends call you and remind you of how much fun you're not having. What are friends for?

Here's the kicker: Apparently at work, Spring Break is an accepted time to just skip work, since so many college students work at my company. Evidently these folks won't get fired for missing a week of work. This could have been brought to my attention yesterday while I was still in funland. Oh well, not only would I not be making money at work, I'd be spending a lot more at the beach.

Who am I kidding? I don't want to be here!

So anyway, if you happened to see this post earlier, it said that I'd finish later. I had gone to Best Buy to buy some outdoor speakers (its getting warm here, time to stay outside). The selection was less than decent, and none of the models they had seemed worthy of their price tag in my opinion. I'll look around elsewhere. I did pick up a wireless router since they were on sale for $69 (after mail in rebate, of course). If you're in the market for one, and don't mind D-Link (no problems to report as of yet) then I suggest you head over the Best Buy and pick one up.

Yeah, this is the end. No updates to the site, no links to click on, no pictures to stare at. I know, my news posting cannot compare to Willow's, but what can you expect from a Spring Breaker spending his vacation at work?

The virtues of a bathtub too often go underappreciated

By Mike Daly
March 18th, 2003

I just took a shower, and let me tell you what, it was great! I didn't have to worry about the shower curtain attacking me and sticking all over my body, or about keeping perfectly still because a wayward step of only an inch would send me toppling over the bathtub wall into the toilet. Yes, my bathtub is enourmous. I feel like I can run laps in it. well, maybe it's not that big, but it sure feels like it after using the cute little 'pocket shower' that I washed myself in for a week.

Yes, I am reffering to Japan, the magical land where an entire apartment could probably fit into your pocket if it weren't connected to a bagillion other pocket apartments. Now that I think of it, many many things in Japan can conveniently fit into a pocket. I suppose the Pocket Monsters are only a natrual extension of that mentality.

What was I talking about?

Oh yeah, Japan. But first, let me forgive myself, I mean you ... please forgive my incoherence of language for a while, for some reason, I was not able to sleep on the plane either too or from Japan, so I've kind of been awake for a while. The whole way back from the airport I was stuttering like a stuttering stanley (a la the sixth sense), you should have heard it!

Where was I?

Oh, right, Japan. Oh wait, first let me get something out of the way: I am a dog-faced liar. I said on at least two occasions that I would have pictures up when I got back. This, however, is not true. I have two disposable cameras full of pictures, but I have to develop them then go through the painstaking process of scanning resizing and thumbnailing each one. As I don't look forward to any step of this process, do not expect it to be done soon. As an additional bonus, we have used up most of our hard drive space our hosting company allows. Oops.

Ok, so Japan. Whew, I'm kind of tired of writing now. Maybe I'll catch you all up tommorow.

Cruel Muses, abandon me not!

By Mike Daly
March 20th, 2003

Coming up with interesting update subjects is really quite entertaining. I suggest you try it sometime, I'm thinking of adding it to my list of hobbies. Anyway, once again I must declare myself a deciever, it seems to be happening more often these days. In this particular infraction, we shall discuss the subject of the subject (me) dicussing Japan.

Well, I was supposed to write an update today (err, yesterday technically) about what Japan was like. Well, after sitting down at the keyboard ready to tell you all, I've come to a realization. Being immersed in a foreign culture is not really something that can be described. The real thing you get out of it is not just what you see or do, it is something completely indescribable. It's experience for your heart instead of your head.

Anyway for that reason, I'm not reall going to say much other than if any of you have an opportunity to go abroad, you should take it with a vengeance. In other news, I'm hoping to work more on mimesis soon, so hopefully I will get some fresh screenshots out of what I've done. Come to think of it, I may want to make a gallery out of my game design work. Hmm... maybe later when I've got more to post.

Expect pictures from Japan within the next year.

The thirty-first hour

By Mike Daly
March 20th, 2003

Is when it happened. It is not usual for the wall to arrive this late. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the physical effects of pulling an all nighter, but it has kind of become on of my hobbies lately. Usually around the 20th hour of consiousness, you "hit the wall", that is, it suddenly becomes extremely difficult to stay awake, this lasts for an hour or two, then passes, and it is not difficult to stay up for the rest of the following day.

I didn't sleep last night (for no good reason), and I noticed an odd phenomenon: I didn't hit the wall. Throughout last night and most of today, I felt no sleepiness. Usually, when you hit the wall, you feel yourself getting very tired and it becomes a struggle to keep your head up and your eyes focused. This time it was different. I didn't notice it was here until I woke up. I was at a presentation on computer animation and art. I knew that sleeping in such a place would be very disrespectful, therefore, I made sure to keep my head up and pay attention. Then I woke up again. This is starting to get disorienting because I have no idea what he is talking about. After the third time I wake up, I start hoping the presentation ends soon so I don't embarass myself, but I know that I'd only been there about 20 or 30 minutes, and it was an hour and a half presentation. At least that is what if felt like. I was obviously misjudging the time I had been there.

I woke up a fourth time to the sound of applause, he had just shown his main movie. Hopefully he would be letting out early then. I checked my watch, it was 5:18; the presentation had already carried over by 18 minutes.

The fact that I had no warning that I was going to fall asleep was kind of new, and the total time disorientation is always fun. Staying up is awesome!

Oh yeah, last night, while not sleeping, I wrote a little php file for opening pictures all pretty like. If you head on over to the galleries you will see what I mean. Also, I started work on a new piece of art for the gallery, but I haven't completed it yet. You'll see it soon.

There's a spider

By
March 21st, 2003

As I'm thinking of what to title this news update, I glance over to my left and see a spider just sitting on the floor, acting like he pays some of my rent. What he doesn't yet realize is that unlike Willow, I am not afraid of these pests, and my foot is about to inflict a great amount of pain.

As I unsuccessfully try to think of a better word than "inflict", the spider makes a run for it, but his 8 legs are no match for my wingspan and I squash him inside a plastic bag. If you are a spider, tell your friends about this story and assure them that the same fate will come to them if they invade my home again (that is unless Willow sees you, then he will just freak out).

Anyways, to the point of my post. It's been a while since I've graced the news section with my presence and I see that Willow has been doing more coding than I have lately and that just isn't right. So I made an improvement on the galleries section. Since its getting bigger, I decided it needed its own link in the menu again, and I make Willow's imageviewer open a window that is the same size of the image, so you shouldn't have to scroll unless the image is too big for your resolution. There are a few bugs to work out though. I'm working on it.

Now I'm going to bed. Its late and I'm tired.

Oops

By Mike Daly
March 22nd, 2003

I think I may have accidentally forgotten to fall asleep again last night. Why do I do this? I am an idiot. In the meantime, I was playing through the demos to Enclave and Dungeon Siege.

Enclave is a beautiful game. It boasts some very impressive production values: it's graphics, sound, and attitude are all right. Right from the beginning, even the menus draw you into it and make you excited to start playing. Then you actually start playing, and immediately decide that you don't want to anymore. I played through the demo, so I bring back warning: the gameplay is completely shallow, loose, and frustrating. Basically, you explore the level, frequently encountering enemies. When you encounter an enemy, you and it basically just run around in strange arcane patters missing each other profusely until one accidentally kills the other. You see all these numbers fly up to indicate damage, but they are easy to miss, and it doesn't really matter anyway.

Dungeon Siege is much less refined in the graphics, sound, and general production the Enclave excels at, but it has it where it counts. Diablo proved that a game where all you do is click on objects (be they enemies, barrels, ect) then those objects explode and reveal random treasure is actually a very addicting gameplay idea. Diablo 2 proved that even if you make a terribly boring tedious repeat of an existing game, it is still fun. Dungeon Siege proves that Microsoft has the ability to clone any gameplay idea they want.

In cooking news, I am generally afraid of leftovers. I don't really even enjoy eating them unless they are cookies or krispy kreme. When I realized that I forgot to eat lunch and dinner yesterday because I was too busy forgetting to go to sleep, I decided to heat up my Sierra club from the panera. I didn't really like the sierra club when I first had it this weekend, but after 45 seconds in the microwave, it turned out to be several fold as good as the original. I am almost considering adding a "leftover sierra club" entry to the cooking section just to annoy Wayne.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: I did a new piece of art while I wasn't sleeping earlier this week. You can marvel at my latest masterpiece right here. Feel free to give feedback

Want some spaghetti?

By Mike Daly
March 26th, 2003

Wayne's ladeling privelages have been permanently revoked after this incident. Apparently, he thought it would just be easier to pour out the wet noodles onto the plate when he had a perfectly good ladel there to do it. It's a good thing the counter, sink, and floor was there to catch it.

In other news, someone (who for Sam's sake, I won't mention names) asked me to design them a counter-strike spray paint logo featuring his favorite weapon, the mac 10. I've done this, and I'm so proud of myself for breaking out of my previous artistic paradigm that I've posted it in the gallery. Feel free to enjoy it here.

By Mike Daly
March 30th, 2003

Well, it's been a couple days since I've updated, so I'll let you folks in on 'the word'.

This past weekend, Wayne and I were both in Atlanta, attending the excellent Cirque de Solei. Seeing that show is definately a lifetime experience. Whether you are in to artsy french (a.k.a. "freedom") stuff or not, you should attend at least one in your lifetime. For that reason, we not only have not updated the site, but also haven't done anything relevant enough to make a worthy update. That's where I come in - the rambler. Or maybe you could call me "Willow - the Ramblinator!"

Right, so anyways; maybe I'll do something cool soon. If so, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I will post some links to older things that maybe you haven't read or have forgotten about:

Well, I hope you enjoyed that little trip down memory lane. Catch you later.

Freaky Dreams

By
March 31st, 2003

I have had 2 consecutive nights of really wierd dreams. Mulitple dreams in one night that have nothing to do with each other.

Last night in one dream there were lots of snakes running around. I hate snakes. Almost as much as Willow hates spiders. In another dream I was driving my first car. I miss changing gears.

Now that I'm trying to write about my dreams, I can't really remember them. The point is, the past 2 nights I have been putting on music from Cirque Du Soleil and going to sleep with it playing all night. I'll continue this and see what kind of crazy stuff my brain dreams up tonight.

I was going to write a rant, but I'm going to take a nap instead. When I do get it up you'll get to take a look at some really cool artsy stuff I can do (or can't).

Wonder of the modern age

By Mike Daly
April 1st, 2003

I have been trying to cut back on two things: getting to sleep too late or not at all, and posting meaningless things here. This post has betrayed both of those goals.

Posterity, however, will eventually thank me for my infringement, because I have found the most amazing thing the computer age has ever produced. Surely, this was the original intention of computers. Without further ado, I present to you:

I'm embarrassed

By Mike Daly
April 4th, 2003

I had all day today all to myself to do whatever I wanted. I figured I hadn't done a comic for the page in quite a long time, so I'd go ahead and do that one for Final Fantasy VIII that I've been meaning to. How did it turn out? Absolutely horrible.

In addition to managing to be not funny, it also represents some of the worst artwork I've done in recent times. The drawings of my characters are extremely inconsistent from frame to frame, and I am really just posting it to remind myself of how shameful I should feel for not practicing my characters in too long. Oh well, what can you do? Maybe some other slow day I can make a redemtion picture that will make up for it. In the meantime, I will just have to live with sucking.

As usual, you can tell us what you think about he new comic here. Have a nice day.

Asphault is black, BLACK!

By Mike Daly
April 6th, 2003

Well, Filming of "The Crash" took place yesterday, and I am proud to announce it was a dismal failure. Everything seemed to be working out fine. We succesfully filmed our driving and crash scenes. But when we imported our movie onto the video editing device (aka Wayne's computer), the results were a little dissapointing. By a little dissapointed, I really mean extremely frustrating. All of our shots are just one big white blur. We were filming asphalt for god's sake! Asphalt is black! Why is our film white?! hold on

WILLOW HAS FORGOTTEN HOW TO USE A COMPUTER! Also he won't think for one second how something can be loaded from a database that didn't get saved to the database first. Come on smart guy, you're destined for back-home-ville this summer if you can't think to hit the "show more rows" button! Now demonstrate your excellent computer skills and clean this up. - Wayne.

Okay, this is wierd

By Mike Daly
April 6th, 2003

I was writing my last post at the desk at work. Then I had to move computers, so I just saved it expecting to edit it up in our office. When I get to the office, my partial post shows up on the webpage, but not in the database. This is a little strange to me. Now not only can I not finish it, I can't fix the blatant spelling error in the title. I guess my only option is to make another post explaining it (hence, now).

Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, black. Our movie is white asphalt is black. Ain't that a load of crap? In addition, we met some serious hurdles when it came to getting the appropriate post-production software to work. As I stated before, when I posted this, I hate windows movie maker because it forces you to use WMV format. Well, not only could we not get movie maker to save to a useful format, it couldn't even load the movie we had already video captured. This means we couldn't edit it unless we managed to get our hands on Premier. After struggling with Premier, we realize that it can't read wmv files, so the intro logo had to be redone. Thanks a lot Microsoft for windows movie faker.

Assuming this post gets saved to the database, I'll hopefully come back later today and show you just what I'm talking about by posting some frame captures.

Okay, nevermind

By Mike Daly
April 7th, 2003

I can't (and don't really want to) figure out how to do frame capture without some sort of extra effort, therefore I won't. The whole thing was just to complain anyway, which I'm trying to keep to a minimum as it is. (I'm not very good at it)

Anyway, I wrote a review of Capcom Vs. SNK 2: EO yesterday, I hope you enjoy it. I kind of start ranting towards the end, so it's a little longer than it needs to be, but hey, nobody complains (or compliments, or says anything at all)

In other news, I will be out of town this weekend, don't be expectin nothin from Wayne in the way of updates (I just said that to enrage him into doing one just to prove me wrong). Ciao

Title under construction

By Mike Daly
April 14th, 2003

Ha! more like 'entire webpage under construction'! Ha ha ha! Oh wait, that wasn't funny.

Right, anyway, in case nobody notices, the main page here has a little bit of a different look. I asked webmonkey wayne to do a little php magic and give us a news archive feature where you could just click on a news title and it would give you a page with that, and it's previous news posts. Well apparently if you don't give monkeys specific enough directions, they decide to change the main page into their little php expariment even if it doesn't work at all. So, we are stuck with a huge mess below the posts that mean nothing. Sure the links are there, but they won't help, trust me.

Things in my neck of the woods are going pretty good I guess. I have easter break soon, and I probably won't be going home for this one, so if you cross your fingers, you might see some art or modeling out of the next couple of days. In other news, I have a short homework assignment due tommorow. It's only 4 questions on material I am fairly well versed with. Apparently the old dog is still doing old tricks (or something like that) because I am not doing my homework or sleeping. Can't you see the brilliant behavioral pattern?
  • Homework is assigned
  • Due date becomes imminent
  • I stay up all night looking at flash sites
  • Don't do homework
  • System failure
Well, that was just in case you had forgotten what an idiot I am.

In exciting web news, somehow Google.com has managed to find our little page. How this happened, I know not. But if you go to google and type "dueling monkeys", you will get us

...

On the 9th page of results, just between Tanarus petitions on the zone.com and the animal crossing community. I am shamed and humbled by the sorts of things that google thinks are more relevant to 'dueling monkeys' than our page (which, notably, does not have anything to do with dueling or monkeys). The most shameful is result number one. If crap like this can make it to the internet, why can't our brand of crap make it to the top?

*bump*

By Mike Daly
April 19th, 2003

Well, I just realized that Wayne has finally fixed the front page problems i mentioned in my previous post. That means I must post more to bump my old post out of existence. There are still a couple odd things about the archive features, but I'm sure you can navigate them and if not, I'm sure Wayne will iron them out soon.

Anyway, on to the excuses. I spent a wonderful weekend these past few days in Northern Virginia visiting various relatives. I had a great time. In addition to having a great time, i didn't get any work done. Natrually Wayne didn't post, so that's why you haven't had a post in a few days.

Anyways, on to miserable excuse for updated content. I have been working on a weapon model for Mimesis in the past week or two, here and here they are. I hope you enjoy. I hope to have it animated up sometime this summer. It looks like I'll have my modeling time the rest of this semester used up with other stuff.

This is a call to all you H4X0R5

By Mike Daly
April 22nd, 2003

Some nice internet-savy person decided to use our server to launch some sort of cyber-warfare-thingy (I don't know the details), and as a result, our server was down and had to get a new OS. Fortunately, all of our content survived, but there are still a few residual effects.

One thing that I noticed (that bothered me the most) was that prior to the attack, my e-mail account was full, and rejecting all incoming mail without telling me. So, this was slightly frustrating. But you can all e-mail me now, I assure you I will recieve it. Uh oh, I have to do work now. I'll finish this post later.

Ok, I'm back. I don't remember what this post was originally supposed to be about, but I have something new to complain about now. I get off of work at 5. I got home today at 6:37. Thanks a lot, CAT bus. I won't rant, for we have already done that extensively. Let's just leave it at the observation that I am not a happy camper. Oh yeah, and there are two new game reviews up.

Ludwig Von Monkey

By Mike Daly
April 24th, 2003

In our original site design we had a downloads section. Eventually, it became clear to us that we didn't make enough stuff to warrant such a section, so we removed it. What I had always wanted, though was a place to let people hear my music. I don't suppose it would hurt that much to just post it here.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my organ music. I must explain a little about this, though. I was playing around with audio effects and exports, and I found this old abandonned opus I started over 3 years ago. It was simple and straitforward, so I used it as an expariment and this is how it turned out. Aditionally, I made this techno version that you may also find interesting. I tried to post a whole music piece, but I couldn't get access to the ftp and I'm not sure what that might do to our bandwidth usage.

Hopefully, there will be more in the weeks to come. If you like what you hear, please feel free to let me know.

Vincent Van Monkey

April 24th, 2003

I spent this afternoon gathering a lot of my modeling and level design stuff into one place. After getting it in the appropriate format, i went ahead and added it to the galleries. So, you will now find a much expanded modeling gallery. This represents a fair deal of the work I've done for mimesis these past two semesters as well as some of the game design stuff I've done before that.

Additionally, I've been working on another movie project, which I've tenatively called "Ios Trailer". I've put together a screenshot of one of the scenes in the art gallery here. Let that be a little preview for you. In the end, the trailer should be a little less than a minute long, feature a mixture of 3d and 2d art, and should have an original soundtrack. Look for it in the distant future.

Summer is coming

By Mike Daly
April 27th, 2003

Yo yo yo. It's such a beautiful day outside, it's quite a shame I have to work all day. Sorry, I don't mean to waste your time telling you things you already know. I especially don't mean to because Wayne will beat me for making useless posts.

So, I have to give this post meaning. As you may have noticed, I have considerable interest in game development stuff. I am very excited about this project:

"... funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The idea is for us to build a UT2K3 mod that teaches kids about the effects of sun exposure. My idea currently is to create a game where you're a life guard on a beach, and your tasks are to run around giving people sun screen, sun block, umbrellas, hats, etc, to slow their exposure to the sun. While you're doing all this, people along the beach will be getting up and swimming, moving their blankets into the sun, playing beach games like catch or some other easily animated action games. In this regard, it's a little like a resource management game, where your resources are the sunscreen bottles, umbrellas and hats, and the levels that you're managing are the sun exposure levels of the people on the beach. "

This may not sound like something a lot of you want to play, but it sounds like a lot of fun to make. Getting to model a scenic beach vista. Create my own perfect vacation spot. Getting to do 3d models and textures for beach chicks, and animate them. You get the idea.

If any of this comes into fruition, You will be seeing some screenshots in the modeling gallery sometime.

Also, (although I've almost given up on the thought of getting feedback) I've been messing around with my graphics engine again recently, but I'm encountering problems. If anybody feels like giving me some C++ pointers, (bad pun, sorry) let me know.

I'm pissed

By
April 30th, 2003

.. At myself. I just had a big program due and misjudged the time required to finish it all on time. There was one part that would have taken an extra 2 hours to get right, and it was worth nearly a third of the total program grade. I've been working on this all day (about 7 hours) and did some work on it the night before. Yet I still will barely pass this assignment. I got a 100 on the last one.

This bothers me. Not only does it make my grade in the class crappy, but I see that I'm not the best at programming, which is pretty important to my major, Computer Science. They say that you like what you are good at. If that's true, it doesn't look promising. I like making this website. I may not contribute to the content much, but I enjoy making it work. The problem is that its not entirely too hard to make something like this work. People get paid to make sites that are efficient, pretty, fast loading, and most importanly: RELEVANT TO SOMETHING. Ok, ok, this site is kinda relevant to ... umm... nevermind.

So yeah I'm whining quite a bit. I'm dissapointed in myself tonight. I'm not sure if I want to pursue this degree or not.

It's easy to say, "Hey Wayne, stick it out and you'll get throught it. It'll pay off" but its not so easy to make it happen. What do I do? I think I'll go get the pliers out of the garage and see if the tooth fairy has any helpful advice. Or some of you could write me about it or anthing else and I could save some teeth.

By the way, we added a new meal after a long drought. Fix it up. It's yummy.

Thank you very much members of the fanbase, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens. As we gather tonight, our server is at war, our income is nonexistant, our foodbanks are depleted, and we have no idea what to post about on our webpage, yet the state of our union has never been stronger.(applause)

We recently met in an hour of shock and suffering. In seven short months, our site has created new recipes for starving college students, brought comic relief to the soldiers on the front line, and built a legacy of original artwork.(applause)

Although sometimes we may loose sight of our ultimate goal, or maybe the purpose of a particular post ... uh, ... what was this post about again?

Thank you, God bless. (applause)

State of the Union Apology

By Mike Daly

I think that yesterday's post epithomizes our role in this site: making posts that make no sense and serve as mere excuses for updates. I have fun doing it, but I don't know if you do. I will make ammends by making another post that makes no sense (what you are reading now) and give an excuse for an update. So I wrote another review, this time on Gunvalkyrie. In other news, someone finally took my pictures from Japan to get developed, so sometime in the near (read: distant) future, I should be putting up a new gallery.

To conclude, for all of you out there are reading this after they get to work in the morning because you apparently don't have anything better to do, check out the excellent webcomic Angel Moxie. It's excellent drawing style was inspiring. While you are at it, you can check out the same artist's other comic Rebus: Heroes for Hire, which is also excellent. Peace out.

Please return your chairs to their full, and upright position

By Mike Daly
May 8th, 2003

I saw X2 a while back, and I highly recommend it. I was a big fan of the first one to start with, but I think I enjoyed this one more. I think that the point of this post is to inform you that you should see that movie.

Right, in other news, here is a nifty little sketch I did for this beach project, pretty, huh? Additionally, here is another one.

I know that's pretty lame as far as content goes, but if you feel like coming up with new, inventive crap every other day, please let me know, and I'll post it. Otherwise, stick a sock in it and go to this rather interesting article. That should keep you baffled for a while.

I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I can sleep

By Mike Daly
May 12th, 2003

This little quote is a short phase a friend told me one time (okay, it was his yearbook quote, but it's practically the same). Over time, I realized it had more pertenance to my life than I had previously thought.

Over the years, I have often find myself with some new burning interest I was willing to comit myself entirely to. About a month later, I would realize that I never really wanted to go through all that hastle in the first place, it was just kind of a temporary thing. Even though I've caught myself doing this countless times, I still continue to do it to this day. One recent example would be these movie projects I keep mumbling about. I really wanted to make movies, but now I wonder where all that motivation came from. Then when I look around, I see the same thing happening to other people and their projects. Most people don't even get out of the talking about doing it phases.

Turning back to my life, I realize that I once went on one of these flights of fancy, but it turned out slightly different. The similarity of the rest of my little flings is that it never materialized into anything, but the difference is that I never gave up. I have now been developing amateur video games for 6 years now.

Setting goals for myself has gone a long way towards keeping me involved in my little projects, but it obviously isn't enough to get the projects completed. What am I missing that could make me pursue these projects with enough intensity to complete them? What reason do I have to continue when I have a lifetime of work ahead of me before I can reach any point that can be useful? Why do I devote so much of my life to something that, so far, hasn't yielded any results? If I continue, will it ever yield results?

Most of the time, when I work on my game, I don't want to. I feel like it would be so easy just to do something fun or immediate. I can make an analogy to trying to stay awake after I've already been awake for 40 hours: it seems so easy and gratifying to just lay your head down and give up. You know you had reasons for staying up, but at this point, you are so tired that those reasons are fuzzy and faded.

Another analogy that comes to mind is distance running. Often distance runners pick a milestone that they can see, and make it their temporary goal just to run until they get to that marker. When they reach that marker, they set a new one and keep going. Setting goals for myself is very similar in concept to this. The unfortunate difference is that I don't know my eventual destination, I don't know how far away it is, and I certainly don't know the path. I don't even know which direction to run.

The only thing that I do know is that the only way I can avoid guaranteed failure is to run. So I run, slow and blind, forever.

I hope Wayne doesn't beat me for this

By Mike Daly
May 18th, 2003

I know it's been a long time since I've added an update. I'm sorry. I'm going to be spending a lot of weekends out in the mountains (i.e. no electricity) this summer, so dry spells like this might be more common. I'll try to post stuff on fridays and mondays, though to even it out.

Anyway, back to the point. Well, as some of you may have realized e3 just completed. E3 is a very exciting time for game enthusiasts, and a bunch of games either got my attention, or got my attention more than they already had it. Although there were lots of interesting games across all platforms, I will focus on the xbox selection. Natrually, Halo 2 and Fable are at the front of the xbox list. Unfortunately, those games aren't going to come out until after the apocolypse, so we will need to take a look at some others.

Actually, I don't want to go on forever about all the games I'm excited about - that would take forever. Instead, what I'm going to do is post a couple of trailers of games i think are cool. If Wayne finds out I'm using this much hard drive space and bandwith, he will probably flog me with a coiled up ethernet cable. The risks I take for you guys... anyhow, check these out, they are in no particular order of importance:
  • Knights of the old Republic part 1
  • Knights of the old Republic part 2
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Halo 2 (slightly broken)
  • Star Wars Galaxies part 1
  • Star Wars Galaxies part 2
(Update: ok, I eventually took those down to put up a much better version of Halo 2 trailer, which I'm sure Wayne will also make me take down)

Something to take note of is that these are all in quicktime format, so you'll need it to watch them.

If you find yourself asking, 'why do I care about stuff that this guy is interested in?' or 'Why isn't there any actual original content in this post?' Please just forget those thoughts or you will be punished.

Oh yeah, and I am spending my time working on my game engine, hopefully, I can post a demo program soon. Also, I'm trying to make Wayne learn flash so we can get some cool stuff going on.

A stab at regularity...

By Mike Daly
May 20th, 2003

Is what this is. I'm very proud of myself you see, I wanted to make a post on wednesday, so I spent tuesday making stuff to post! I'm not going to refer to today as either because I'm in that grey area that could be either depending on your time zone.

Right, anyway, I was playing with this software synthesizer I have and, once again, found an ancient throw-away project that I could convert to mp3 after a bit of tweaking. I originally wrote this in the spring of 1999, crazy, no? Without further ado, I give you Nameless Opus. Hm... maybe I should come up with a name for it. If you have any suggestions, natrually you should let me know.

Wait! That's not all! Today (and today only (probably) ) you don't just get one tidbit of content update... For a limited (read: indefinite) time, you will get not one, but TWO tidbits of content! What I'm referring to here is a program download that represents the code I finally got working for my game engine. This is just a small portion of the engine, specifically the part that deals with static structures. Really, I don't expect anyone to appreciate the programming that goes into this, but you can at least check out my cool tower. Right, here it is. Just a couple notes first, though (why do I always forget this part till after I post the link?), it's compressed in a zip file, so you'll need to be able to break one of those open, and additionally, it requires you have DirectX 9 installed. Unfortunately, you can thank vsual sudio for an enormous exe size - thanks visual studio.

That's it my little grease monkeys, now come back friday.

Look at all these updates to the webpage! It's pure madness! I can't take much more of it!

In the past few days I've been working on a message board where you, our beloved readers, can easliy give feedback, comment on our stupid posts, or whine about whatever. Its not too fancy, but I wanted to keep it simple. Please use it, I could have taken a nap instead of working on it.

There are a couple of new recipies up, although right after I posted "Frozen Veggies" I realized that Willow had already taken care of it ages ago. But mine has a list of all the stuff Green Giant makes, so HA! Take THAT you evil monkey!

Alright boys and girls, its time for you to go play now. So head on over to Your Two Cents and spill your guts

oops, sorry

By Mike Daly
May 25th, 2003

I was out of town for the weekend, and I didn't get back in until tonight, hence the lack of update continuity. Natrually Wayne didn't think to post, but Wayne is a busy important guy with other things to do, whereas I am not.

Anyway, considering I was in northern Virginia all weekend (I do not live in northern VA), I haven't had any time to do anything meaningful, however, I will show you somthings I believe are worth showing...

Wesley Monkey Exposed!

Oh yeah, that reminds me ... well, it doesn't really remind me, but I just remembered, so it's kind of like it ju-*SMACK*

Oh, right. I would like to present to you Gotham Girls. This is a little 10 part mini-series of flash movies about the female characters of Batman's Gotham City. Let me get one thing strait: I hate batman, the cartoon show that these little flash movies is based off of is a bunch of crap. However, nothing can keep me from loving this series, mainly because it ignores the most blatant problem with the cartoon: Batman. Anyway, it's the most well done flash I've ever seen. Enjoy.

Man, I'm not being too clever today

By Mike Daly
May 27th, 2003

I was late for work, I sat around and barely accomplished anything the rest of the day, and now I can't think of a title for my post. What a dull day, but I guess everyone has them, so I'd best get relevant or Wayne will whine my ear off about making meaningless posts.

First and foremost, Wayne and I did a little revamping of the messageboards today. Now, each post is accompanied by an icon. They are pretty cool, I think. Everyone should go post some stuff so you can see them, won't it be fun?

Wayne doesn't consider that enough content to warrant posting, so to avoid abuse, I suppose I have to put up something else. I wasn't intending on ever releasing this piece of music I wrote, but I guess I don't have much else up my sleeve, so enjoy it while you can. I present Ios Final Battle.

I wrote that back in my junior year in high school, it was one of the first pieces I ever made. Hope you like it. If you do actually like it, or even don't like it, let me know. I'd appreciate it.

Hopefully I'm going to be learning illustrator soon. I've designed up 3 new characters (not for the website) and I'm going to ink and color them with vectors so that I have the option of making them into posters.

Right that's all. Sorry about not doing any decent art or writing recently, but I've just got other things on my plate. Please come back anyway.

Pretty please?

Foiled!

By Mike Daly
May 29th, 2003

Last night, Wayned said he'd make the post for today because he had pertinent things to talk about and I didn't. As it turns out, he didn't. I am begining to suspect that him telling me that he would post would make me forget about it, so that I wouldn't post useless garble. Well, Wayne, consider yourself foiled!

Now to catch people up with all manner of random uninteresting news. I have been playing with Illustrator recently. It's a much more difficult beast to tackle than photoshop, but I'm starting to get ahold of it. I have a picture to post, but I can't do that from here because I'm at work. Hopefully I'll remember to update and add it when I get home.

I'm designing 3 characters for a student organization I'm helping found, I'll post the pictures once I have them fully Illustratored for any comments and critisizm.

Other than that, I'm leaving once again for the weekend. This time to Virginia Beach. I won't be back until later Monday, so I'll miss a post. I'm sure you can cope.

(Update!) I just wrote a game review for the infamous Metal Gear Solid 2. Check it out, yo!

Ciao

Life is like a whirlwind

By Mike Daly
June 4th, 2003

Man, you wouldn't believe how busy I've been recently! I haven't been able to slow down all week, and that's after taking a few days off work. I've been constantly darting between events this past week, which, when combined with Wayne's disinterest in posting stuff means no updates have been here for a while.

I plan to remedy that, with this a little character I made for the game developer's club. I hope to make 3 more interesting ones and post them all.

Don't count on it coming soon though, the whirlwind is still on the horizon, I never know when I'll be swept away for a few days. If any of this sounds really stupid, it's because I didn't get any sleep last night.

I figure I should give a link for some bored person to follow. Let me think ... yes, I have it. Today's selection is something so pathetic, that it leads one to wonder if it's just some sort of sick joke. Anyway, enjoy: 'OUR MISSION STATEMENT: To track, synthesize and expose the secret, social and political corruption of America's powerful, government financed Lesbian Mafia.

It's madness, I know. Hey, if you guys have some interesting links, why don't you post a few of them in the messageboards?

The Answer

By Mike Daly
June 8th, 2003

Most of the time, I am bothered by myself when I go a day without accomplishing something tangable. Today in my boredom, I decided to learn about hypnosis. While practicing self-hypnosis, I was very relaxed and began to think about things with a clear mind.

This inspired me to basically spend the day in meditation. Towards then end of my meditation, I decided to write my thoughts down so that I would not forget them, and so I have spend the past 4 hours organizing my thoughts onto paper. The result certainly wouldn't be classified as a rant, but doesn't fit any better into our other categories, and was too long to put in the actual post, so you can find it over in the rants section of our two cents. Without further wordiness, I give you The answer, a short story by me.

Even if I hadn't written it down, I would still consider today one of the most productive of my life.

On a lighter note, a couple days ago, I transfered another character to illustrator. Now you can see the scientist, a mascot character for a video game club I'm working on founding.

Hope you enjoy my story, if you have anything to say, don't hesitate to share your thoughts on the messageboard, I garuntee that Wayne and I will both read them, and probably respond.

*Update!* Reading over my story this morning, I realized that when cutting and pasting my story to the database, I left out a crucial paragraph. The difference if you have already read it is my final question to my subconscious, it is now what it is supposed to be and the story makes a little more sense.

Desperate for content

By
June 10th, 2003

I admit it. I'm desperate for content. I'm so boring, I know. I'm just not photoshop handy like our friend Willow. I wrote a rant tonight. It's not so much of a whinefest as just my two cents (no pun intended), which is just fine since the page it can be found on is under our two cents.

Anyway, Willow promises some cool stuff for Friday. I'm also going to try to learn the tricks of the 3D trade. Wish me luck.

By the way, I was going to post a movie of the two of us unleashing monkey hate on some apples, but the movies got deleted. Sorry. Hopefully they are backed up somewhere. I'll look harder later.

A little cultural diversity

By Mike Daly
June 12th, 2003

Wayne and I love to rant about how stupid aspects of our society can be, but now we are proudly able to diversify our pool of complaints to our society AND France. Our senior foreign correspondant in France, Wastrel, has been kind enough to give you all a little insight as to what it is to live in another part of the world.

So, head over to rants and check out La Grève. In other news, I have started project sunburn, in theory I should be working on it for about 20 hours a week, which means for you that I should be producing a boatload of new pictures and screenshots. Keep your eyes out.

And on one last note, don't foget to do something for father's day.

Who loves ya?

By Mike Daly
June 15th, 2003

Well, I just got back from the mountains, and I realized that I promised to update today. Why do I do this? I mean, between Friday and Monday, I mostly sit on my butt or sleep, and I do so far from a computer, so I really can't ever expect to accomplish anything productive. With this in mind, what am I supposed to do for mondays update?

well, after about nine minutes contemplation, I've decided to make an update where I don't give you my content, but rather the content of people who are actually talented. In this case, I've decided to post the direct feed halo 2 demo shown at e3 this year. Unlike the one I posted earlier that had crappy compression, was recorded by a camcorder, and was being driven by a drunk retard, this one is high res, sharp and detailed (driver's retardation still in question).

Halo 2 Real-time demo

However, I understand that that will only get you 9 minutes of ecstacy (well, like 3 hours if you count the download time), so I've decided to also bring to light another thing that I've been meaning to tell you all about. After all of my webcomic reading, I've settled into a new favorite. It's cute, it's easy to read, and most of all, it's updated daily. I present A Modest Destiny, hooray! I love it!

Remember, if you feel like commenting on my bandwith-oblivious post or this excellent webcomic, take it to the messageboard

Wayne's Wednesdays

By
June 16th, 2003

We've decided to evenly divide the updating, so I've picked up Wednesdays and Willow will keep Mondays and Fridays. He's got lots of stuff he's working on, so he should have plenty of stuff to post on those days. I should be able to come up with something for a good read on hump days, so I hope this move will improve the site. If it doesn't, please fill out the Wayne removal form and state a valid reason.

In other news, I went to the beach this weekend and got on this weird sleeping habit where I go to bed before midnight and get up before 9 AM. I know its hard to fathom, but trust me, you can do it. Unfortunately I still love to sleep and do so in the afternoons, so last night/today I slept for like 14 hours. This isn't good for site improvment, but I'm sure I'll get back in the habit of staying up late, when the best work gets done. I'm going back to the beach this weekend though to get some fishing in, so it might be a while.

For now, read this reivew on Metal Slug and then you can email me asking how you can play it yourself. Discuss its greatness on the message board and speaking of that, thanks a bunch for starting to use it. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. So long friends, see you next week

Broken Promises

By Mike Daly
June 19th, 2003

You know what? From now on, I should just never say I'm going to do anything. No matter how easy and sure it seems that I'll be able to do something, I should never tell anyone that I can do it. Why? Because of fate.

Fate hates me, you see. It twists the tapestry of my life until a once-clear day of work becomes infinitely muddled and busy. This is the case with today, the day I was so certain I could get a lot of modeling work done, i actually don't get any work done and get all stressed out not doing it.

Anyway, fortune has smiled upon me and given me something to post (other than meaningless whines). Wayne and I were downloading pictures off of my camera and noticed two gems which should not go without publication. If you were wondering what Central Park Ski Willow looks like, let your curiosity be satisfied. Additionally, you can also observe Talking on the phone with a motorcycle helmet with hands down his pants Willow.

Had enough? I thought so. But I will post more just to make sure I can't possibly have anything to post on monday. I converted another piece of music to mp3 format. This one is actually the worst I've done and I wasn't even going to post it. But as the barrels have run dry, I'm going to do it anyway. Check out Opus 27 (great title, huh?).

And just for the record, I do not promise to post any new content by or on monday. I don't know what the post will be about, but I'm not going to say it will be about content I've created.

Things to watch out for

By Mike Daly
June 22nd, 2003

You know, I once thought pokemon to be a video game. Thank god that I found this article which revealed to me that pokemon is actually the work of the devil sent from the land of heathens to corrupt our children with sorcery and mind control.

Whew! That was a close one! I'd better go burn my nintendo.

But seriously folks, be wary of religion. Anywho. As (not) promised, I haven't done anything productive all weekend. That's why I'm posting links instead. However, to make up for my pathetic ineptitude as a website-guy-person is Dueling Monkey's Senior Foreign Correspondant Wastrel. Wastrel returns again to give you some appreciation for the cool that you got in his article Air Conditioning.

I'm hoping to redraw all of the duelingmonkeys sometime soon, so keep an eye out. However, I don't promise to do it. I don't know when I'll do it, if at all. Right now they are on paper but I can't scan them and illustrator them right now, especially saying as illustrator no longer works on my computer. That aside, I also have to be up at 6:30 tommorrow. Man, why do I do this?

Right, I'm getting to bed.

A new movie!

By
June 24th, 2003

********** UPDATE! **********
Some people were not able to view the apples video posted below. This is probably because they didn't have the Divx® 5 codec. This is a free download and is only 3.1 Mb. The compression that Divx offers allows us to host more video to more people, and cuts your download time dramatically. For example, I compressed the apples video from 47 Mb without audio to 3.8 Mb with audio. I think its safe to say that whenever possible, we will be using the Divx 5.0.5 codec and probably Windows® Media Player®

We have provided a link in the downloads section of "cool stuff" for Divx. Please email us if you have any problems. Thanks!

I hope every Wednesday update can be as good as today's. First off, I was looking for some techincal support while creating the movie mentioned below and stumbled upon this website that has some midly funny instructions. It appears that this company's English is just a little better than my Taiwanese.

Now for the good stuff...

A while back, Willow and I had some apples not fit to eat and decided to deal with them in an unorthodox manner. Please excuse any acts of stupidity, as I somehow was deemed the star in this Oscar® nominee. I hope you have Windows Media Player. If not, you must get it now, or get to a computer that has it.

Ok maybe not now, but soon. Anyway, Willow has some new 3D models coming for Friday. I have seen them myself; I promise they will make it up instead of what happened last Friday.

Until then, go to the next occupied cubicle and hug your co-worker. It's hump day.

Coming through for Willow

By
June 26th, 2003

This slacker stayed up all night doing work and then left town without posting it. Well I can't follow suit and let down on my promise to make sure the content was up, so I'm posting some of what he did and I'll explain.

So Willow's got this cool job where he does 3D modeling all day (in theory) and gets paid decent money for it (decent being the same amount as me except a lot less physical work). He's also trying to start this Game Devolopers Club at school so he and some others can work on a big project or something. I'm doing the webpage for the site. It's a work in progress. Willow will tell you that starting a student organization is no walk in the park. I concur.

Anyway, on with the content. I spent a good hour trying to find this stuff on Willow's computer(s) and then figuring out how to start up UT2003 and take a snapshot. I know of four models he's recently done: a watch tower, a beach umbrella, a palm tree, and an enourmous bottle of sunblock.

Wow, that was a confusing bunch of links to type in this little text box. And it was a lot of work for our boy Willow. Good work. Everyone tell him how his excellence radiates through the fiber optics that is the internet.

I also added a new rant today after reading an article from CNN. It is entitled, Stupid Drivers.

Now have at all those links and then gossip in the message boards

"Organization" is misleading

By Mike Daly
June 28th, 2003

As Wayne mentioned friday, I am trying to start up a student organization - the Game Developer's Club. As simple as starting a club sounds, it is a very painful process. But, now that I have experience with it, I can give you guys a short little guide to starting student organizations! There are two main ways to go about it:

1) The Lazy Way (recommended)
  • Don't start a student organization.
2) The "Correct" Way
  • Get an information packet from the SORC describing the process
  • Find students interesting in helping get things started and hold an interest meeting (note: this step will fail)
  • Get a faculty sponsor
  • Get a permanent phone number, e-mail address, and campus mailing address for your organization
  • Fill out the new student organization application
  • Create an organization constitution outlining all group policies, puposes and bylaws
  • Schedule a meeting with a student legal services advisor for assistance with IRS and tax information
  • Get someone to help plan and create an organization webpage; get someone else to set up a server to host it
  • Call the IRS and request form SS-4, an application for Employer ID Number
  • Make a list of local banks and ask them if they have a minimum starting amount and minimum account balance for a non-interest bearing community checking account (note: This step involved communicating with idiots)
  • Ask for your advisor's social security number and fax number so that you can complete form SS-4.
  • Hunt down four friends and write their names and social security numbers on the New Student Organization application and turn it in
  • Go to the NC State Government's webpage and download an information packet on non-profit organizations
  • Apply to be a non-profit organization
  • Start sending mail to local companies requesting funding
  • Make a detailed budget plan for the initial events and send that as well as an application for funds for student senate
  • Use your Employer ID number to start a community checking account
  • Use initial funds to make fliers and posters
  • Attend welcome back pack events and publicize
  • Hold an initial official meeting where you beg nerds to join committees and help you plan events
I know it sounds like fun, but only a select few (namely anyone) has the opportunity to do it. I was always curious why we didn't have a game developer's club already, but now I know. The second set of instructions is only the stuff I've encountered so far, it may involve more that I just don't know about yet.

Anyway, in case anyone is wondering what I was doing this weekend, I spend 23 hours in a car driving halfway across the country and back. Obviously, I didn't get any work done during this time, but that's where other people come in. As usual, I wll post the work of other people, but this time, it will partially contain some of my work. Following is a movie that my partner Kevin made to demonstrate milestone #1 for project Sunburn, hope you like it.

Project Sunburn Milestone #1

As usual, you can take your critisism out on the messageboard. Good night.

It's not my fault

By
July 1st, 2003

So Willow and I had this crazy idea to do some stop-motion animation with this wooden doll he picked up somewhere. It was going to be great! We went through an hour of positioning, taking dozens of photos. Then, it happend. FILE NOT FOUND!!! WHAT! Why not!? The camera said ding ding dammit! Apparently you have to have the camera in the right mode. Thanks a lot Mr. Let-us-borrow-the-camera-guy. Why does your camera have to suck so much? It's ok. Don't beat yourself up, I'll do it later.

A possible storyboard (though I must reassure you it is highly unlikely) was donated by the camera guy. I won't tell you the dialouge, but if you can guess the story the author promises you a box of cookies. Post your most educated guess(es) here. Here is Frame One, Frame Two, and Frame Three.

I will tell you that this weekend Willow and I are going on a road trip and the camera is going with us. It should promise a fun video, especially since we'll be super bored on a 12 hour drive. And once we get the stop-motion thing working it should be neat too.

Oh yeah, write this down: 2 * 150 watt lightbulbs + 300 watt power supply = HOT ROOM.

Fun Fun Fun

By
July 6th, 2003

Willow and I almost had more fun than we could handle this weekend. After arriving at Lake Chatuge (at 4:15 am) we of course went to sleep, but the next morning the fun began. Tubing and wakeboarding from behind a new boat, jumping the enormous wake from the aforementioned boat with jet skis, and darting on and off road with dual sports.

I'll have to say that all that fun can do a number on your back. And your shoulders. And your legs. Come to think of it my entire body hurts. Especially after riding in a car for the past 7 hours. The trip home took longer than usual due to July 4th traffic and some people who had to stop and look at wrecks on the other side of the interstate. We were backed up for an hour at less than 10 miles per hour, sometimes stopped, because of this.

Even we get bored on trips that long, so we played the state game: see how many different license plates you can spot from start to finish. We saw 28 states including our own driving from Lake Chatuge (on the border of NC and GA) to Raleigh.

Anyway, this is all we have for today. There are more pictures from the weekend but it might take a while to get them. We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday. By the way, don't forget what those fireworks represent.

Not much for today, but we do have a short video of some of Willow's mad skillz. The hand was modeled and animated in 3D Studio Max. It's for holding a "weapon" in the sunburn project we've been mentioning over the past couple of weeks.

Willow speaking now, Wayne doesn't really know what to say, and saying as he helped me out with my updates, I'm takin' over this one.

So yes, that is my hand model, and I'm getting paid to make that for 'academic' purposes. Isn't my job great? In fact, although not as humorous as the other, I think I'll make a movie of my other recent model for project sunburn.

Making movie ...

Done! That was easy. Athough probably less interesting, this is the Sand Crab I made for the same job. In case you were curious, those were both compressed with the divx codec. This lets them bee itty-bitty little files, which is good for us. If you don't have the divx codec, you can download it from www.divx.com

Well, I think that satisfies the content requirement for a post even for the likes of Wayne, so I'm going to hit it. Peace out, see you friday.

By the way, something really cool happens 2 weeks from today. BE READY!

pardon me

Hey guys! I know we've been sticking to this whole Monday/Wednesday/Friday format, but I have something to say that I felt like posting RIGHT NOW, so just bear with me a minute, it'll be short.

I HATE sleep! I hate it. I don't ever want to go to sleep again. It's 5 am, my whole body is tired, it's begging me to go to sleep. Everybody else has gone to sleep, there is nobody to play with. But I HATE SLEEPING! I don't want to do it EVER again.

Looks like a case of the mondays

By Mike Daly
July 13th, 2003

For yet another weekend, I managed to get my sleeping cycle turned on it's head in just 2 days. Waking up at 4pm then having to go to sleep again so you can wake up at 6:30 am the next day is not as easy as it sounds.

Despite all that, I've been playing with some pretty cool stuff this weekend. If you could wade through the gibberish of friday's post, you could have found out that I created a character model for use with Unreal Tournament. Currently, I'm only done with the modeling phase, so I still have texturing, animating, and importing to go.

Before I got started on that, though, I figured I'd play with the head that I'd modeled and tweak it to come up with a few variations, and make them high-res. This is the result: my characters. After this, I decided to make a movie out of my favorite of the five. Allow me to introduce Xavier, my virtual person, created from scratch.

That's what I've been up to. Wayne also managed to do his fair share of work. Of course his work was setting up a new surround sound system. We both spent the night organizing the mess of cables in the living room and putting all of our game stuff in some sort of reasonably organized order. This is the result.

Anyway, that's the sort of fun stuff we've been up to. Hopefully I'll get this model done soon, when I do, you'll know it. See you Friday.

Whoops

By
July 15th, 2003

I almost forgot to update. Usually it's done between midnight and 5 am. I got up this morning and realized I'd forgotten.

Anyway, I posted some pictures of my new cousin, Cooper, and some of my family, which can be found in my gallery. The dogs are named Hannah (the bigger, whiter collie), Zack (the smaller, darker collie), and Riley (the short golden dog with no feet).

I don't have time right now to record the movie from the video camera, but later today I'll post Willow's disection of a watermelon.

Until then, be sure to check out this little game I've got going on in the message boards. Read this thread and join in. Make plenty of guesses and you can catch up with Wesley and Wastrel. If they are still way off by the time I post the movie I'll drop more hints.

Have a great day!

Looks like he's good for more than just webpages after all

By Mike Daly
July 17th, 2003

Howdy folks. This friday, I have a nice treat for you. Wayne has put us together a nice little movie for you to watch. It depicts the proper procedure for a surgical operation on a watermellon. May I present:

Like a Surgeon

I hope you are as entertained as we were while making it. While Wayne was busy editing that little film, I was busy at work as well. As I have mentioned I have a job doing some game art, and I have managed to come up with a couple new tidbits i can post.

First off, I'm going to show a couple of the level, which is finally making it's way to presentable mode: shot 1, shot 2, shot 3, and shot 4. Also, as you may have noticed in one of the above, I created a custom character model for the game. You can see him in action in one of the normal UT levels here, and here.

Well, I guess that'll be all for now. Come back monday because I'm sure I will not have anything to write about and will post a funny link instead.

New Projects

By
July 20th, 2003

We have decided to start a couple of new projects here lately.

Number 1: A mod for UT 2003 We can't tell you much about this mod right now because we're still early in the planning stages, but here's the gist of it so far...

So you're this guy who's dreaming and he's on some quest in this dream but its not like real life at all. It's going to be wierd. There are giant mushrooms to jump around on and giant trees with those big flappy fungus things that grow around the trunk so you can climb and stuff. Here are a couple more screenshots of the mushroom we threw in a UT level. See a view from atop the mushroom (with the rocket launcher in hand, of course) and underneath it with a bot running around to give an idea of how giant they actually are.

Number 2: Top Secret I can't say anything about this project except that we think it will be really funny and will probably inevitably attract more hits than we could ever afford.

I guess thats it. Oh well, its a lot more than most college students do in the summer.

If you get hungry sometime in the near future try out the Steak Stir Fry or the Hawaiian Chicken. Both we're pretty good and a lot less greasy than the Gumby's Pizza we had tonight.

See you Wednesday, and the Cookie contest ends Wednesday too! (around midnight Tues night / Wed Morning)

I hate computers

By Mike Daly
July 22nd, 2003

I really do. You wouldn't believe how much computer crap I've had to go through in the past 24 hours, everything I try to do hits a wall due to a computer malfunction be it game design, training movies, or fixing critical computer malfunctions.

I don't suppose that really has any relevance to anyone, I just thought I would let you know. Maybe I should write a rant on the crappiness of computers soon. The real relevance of this update however is to serve two purposes: First, to point out that I have added a new picture gallery entitled Humor. Why don't you all take a look, there is some funny stuff there.

Secondly, and mainly, I'd like everyone to wish Wayne a happy 21st birthday! Our little fellow has finally come of age, and you should all join his celebration. It will be at, uh ... I don't know. I'm not going, so it doesn't really matter to me, why would I care? But everyone else should go.

BYE!

The aftermath

By
July 24th, 2003

Thanks for all who came out with me to celebrate my birthday. And thanks also to those who wanted to come, but couldn't for one reason or another.

With all the celebrating going on, we haven't had too much time to give you a fun way to end the week. Sorry, but you'll have to head over to Homestar's or something in the meantime.

Willow forgot to end my little cookie contest the other day so I'll finish it up here. Wesley is the undisputed champion and has 10 days to claim his prize. ah hahahaha. You should have read the fine print sucker!

For those of you not aware, Wesley is in Japan until mid-August.

Anyway, here is the original "artwork" provided by one of our readers. I give you, Warren's Story.

One more thing, I added Moore's Chicken to the cookbook. It's quick and easy.

Have a good weekend folks!

All alone

By Mike Daly
July 27th, 2003

Hey guys. Wayne is out of town on vacation all this next week, which basically means that I will be doing all the updates. At the same time, nobody will be here to remind me to update, which means I might be at work Monday morning, sitting at the info desk and realize that I should update but not have any idea what to show or talk about.

Entirely hypothetical situation, of course.

Right, sooo ...

uhh, don't forget to read your Strongbad e-mail for today. Peace out.

death-defying laziness

By Mike Daly
August 3rd, 2003

Well, I managed to blunder up another week of updates. With Wayne gone, I forgot all about updating, and over the weekend (which I spent out of town), I didn't think to do anything that I could post. Therefore, this post will just serve as a reminder that I am alive.

I've got another milestone for Project Sunburn on friday, so you will probably be seeing some work done before then. Maybe, that is, I'm not promising anything. We'll just have to see if Wayne can come up with something in time for wednesday.

Right, so sorry, but that's it. If you have something to say about our slackness, feel free to inform us via the feedback form.

Toodles.

My update has meaning

By
August 5th, 2003

... And Willow's doesn't. Haa-ha-ha. Ha-ha-ha-ha.

Not a lot of meaning though. I did a game review for my second purchased Xbox game for the console I don't own. I guess I'll have to buy one at some point. Maybe I'll wait for Xbox 2!

Anyway, here's the review. Happy hump day.

Opening a can of update

By Mike Daly
August 10th, 2003

First and foremost, let me humbly appologize for our infrequent and pathetic updates these past two weeks. As you may know, Wayne went on vacation, and when he got back, we both had a lot on our hands. Oh well, I'm glad that's out of the way - on to the fun.

To get some old stuff out of the way, I started writing a game review a while back, but had to abruptly stop. What I had done is up, but I haven't taken the time to finish it. Feel free to check out Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, a great game.

Additionally, I have been periodically sticking screen captures from project sunburn in the galleries. I decided that the modeling gallery was getting too large, so I split it up in two. Most of the sunburn stuff is in the 'game dev' folder.

While I'm at it, I might as well remind you that Wayne wrote a very good analysis of Tiger Woods. That's worth a read.

On to the meat and bones of our update: Wayne and I took the time to write a sizeable article about a recent experience we had. We barely got out with our lives, so we figured we owed it to the world to warn those that might encounter it in the future. You can learn from our mistakes by reading about them in The Great Pyramids. This rant is a little special because we planned it out together, and then wrote it tag-team style, which worked out quite nicely. We even took the time to tell you at which points we tagged off.

Finally, in addition to all that, Wesley gets back from Japan Today, and Wastrel gets back from France/Hungary on Thursday, so there might be some changes to the way the page runs soon, including, but not limited to, new people giving you updates.

Peace out.

I am Wesley Monkey, and this is my first post (applause). I am also a student at NCSU along with Willow and Wayne (applause) and WE LIVE TOGETHER (a lone cricket chirps). I have finally returned from my world travels (quiet reverence) and will be sharing my worldly wisdom (read: useless drivel) with you weeknights at 10!!! (wild applause). not only that my little monkey fans, but i can cook too! (silent awe, followed by ecstatic applause and cheers).

as i have only just returned, i have not been formally added to the site yet, and anything you read about me is misinformed misinformation. as soon as i get around to it, my information will be updated and i will officially be part of the site. thank you for you attention, you may now return to your regular programming. I'm getting sloppy

By
August 14th, 2003

I missed an update! I know, I know, I'm starting to go the ways of Willow. Don't worry, there will be at least one more contributor to pick up our slack, maybe two if Wastrel wants in. The only problem is that these two make up like half our audience.

Anyway, I wrote a review of Tropico 2: Pirate Cove. I like it. Read it and see if you'd like it.

We finished up Willow's new room. You know, the garage to bedroom conversion. Threre are some pictures in the snapshots gallery, or you can see them directly by clicking the list of links below. Willow also finished a poster (190k) for the Game Developer's Club. It's original size was 2 feet by 3 feet! I managed to size it down to something you don't have to scroll for miles, but it's still rather large.

Well thats all for this week. Sorry for shorting you a read on Wednesday. Have a good weekend and I'll try to remember to update for Monday since Willow is out until Monday afternoon.

Later.

Introducing the new unbelievable SEARCH!

By
August 17th, 2003

Ok actually the search feature sucks. It doesn't do any kind of sorting by relevance. All it does is look for the existance of the word you typed in. And I stress the word. If you search for two or more words you won't find much of what you're looking for.

Hopefully I'll improve it over time, but for the hour I put into it, it'll do. Right now you can only search for news items or for recipies. Like say if you are in the mood for chicken, you can search for 'chicken' under ingredients (or in the title of a food).

There is also a little bug with hitting the back button to go back to search results. I'll have to look into that when I care a little more.

Well folks, thats all I have for today. And be thankful for that. I had an eventfull weekend with hardly any time to come up with something for the webpage. It's no google, but it does the trick, for now.

Peace out homies

My face falls down hard.

Ouch.

Today, the fourth day

it's easier to just complain

By Mike Daly
August 21st, 2003

Everyone around here sure whines a lot about how crappy my updates are, but it's friday morning, and I don't see anyone else stepping up to bat, so you people will have to deal with it.

So, uh in case you didn't get it, my last post was a set of haiku talking about the return of school, among other things. I used to think I loved going to college. As it turns out I do love going to college, just not going to class.

I'm actually pretty grumpy about the 23 books I have to buy this semester, so instead of posting a big whine about it which will cause me to be inevitably griped at by Wayne, I will just end it with this (which will inevitably get me griped at by Wayne).

New Server

By
August 25th, 2003

The server will be down for the labor day weekend as we are moving to a new deal. I don't really feel like spending my labor day vacation doing computer crap, so don't expect anything up in a timely fashion. Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. There won't be any more updates or site additions until then. When the site is back up and running, everything from before this post will be back exactly as it is now (hopefully).

Sorry for the inconvienence, but I seriously doubt there will be many visitors over the weekend anyway. We'll have more bandwidth, more hard drive space, and more control over what stuff can be done. It's a good move for us.

Until we get it fixed, I'll leave you with this:

Swing in this tree
Oh I am bounce around so well
Branch to branch,
limb to limb you see
All in a day's dream
I'm stuck
Like the other monkeys here
I am a humble monkey
Sitting up in here again
But then came the day
I climbed out of these safe limbs
Ventured away
Walking tall, head high up and singing
I went to the city
Car horns, corners and the gritty
Now I am the proudest monkey you've ever seen
Monkey see, monkey do

Then comes the day
Staring at myself I turn to question me
I wonder do I want the simple, simple life that I once lived in well
Oh things were quiet then
In a way they were the better days
But now I am the proudest monkey you've ever seen
Monkey see, monkey do
Monkey see, monkey do

And we're back.

By
September 7th, 2003

Man I almost forgot how to update! It's been so long I bet you folks won't even visit today. It won't matter much though, because I'm not going to do much other than tell you a few things. I think there are a few recipies to add for Wednesday though. Maybe a rant or two. I should write one about how much I hate doing homework, which I managed to avoid all weekend even though I had plenty of time and plenty of homework.

For those of you that don't know about the movie rental thing, just ignore it. Or maybe you're supposed to know, just not yet. Anyway, the site is taking shape, but there's A LOT of work to be done. You can check it out at movies.duelingmonkeys.com/atoz.php. Please don't add any movies, but even if you do, I'll just delete them when I'm ready to release the site. When that time comes, you'll have to register and log in to see anything worth seeing. I'm waiting on the IMDB to email me back with permission to use their info. I might have to buy a license, but I'm not trying to make a profit, so I shouldn't have to.

Today for lunch we went to the Bear Rock Cafe. It was excellent. I highly recommend you go sometime soon. The one in Cary is across the way from Best Buy at Crossroads. The prices for a really good sandwich are less than $6 which includes a bag of chips, pretzels, or fruit. You can also substitute a loaded baked potato for $1.50 or a salad for $1 more. The bread they use really makes it worth the visit. And they have free wireless internet conncetions if you have a laptop and need to do some work during lunch.

So it's hurricane season and there are a few little storms headed our way. If any of them aren't too serious but still make a lot of wind and rain, let's have a party. It'll be fun. We can make hurricane's, or course, and act like we don't have anything else to do. Of course the last thing I want is anyone's house to wash away or someone to get injured or killed, but as long as none of that happens lets go have fun with it.

Once again, I apologize for the long delay in updates. I have a lot to do this semester and websites is not at the top of my priority list (even though I make a few minutes for it somehow).

Have a happy Monday!

Its just one of those days

By Wastrel
September 9th, 2003

Look in the sky... its a bird... its a plane.... wait acutally there's nothing there just some clouds (maybe). That's right turn your head down, a little to the left, and back up... yeah.. ummm that's it! There on a couch, or laying in a field, or maybe on a sofa... sitting doing nothing and looking like a bum. Yeap that's right its Wastrel Monkey!!! (Applausometer shoots off the scale)

Cuz well I'm not superman and I'm a wastrel, seriously, this means you will have to deal with this update being unorganized and well contentless. But then again I learned from the master himself Willow and therefore you are all (that's right count it three of you I know I'm giving us way too much credit here) already used to it. This is why I am doing this update instead of homework and staying up 'till the wee (that's right wee) hours of the morning for nothing getting no sleep. Did I already mention I learned from the best. So yes...Uh oh here he starts again.... "Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays!"

So the point of this post is to say I just watched Office Space for the umptillienth time, and it was GREAT!! It has been a while since I enjoyed this movie to this extreme. I declare it should receive an all-time great award, something like a lifetime achievement award. Movies with this award will for sure be on the top of the movie exchange list. In the meantime I suggest you guys check out a site to fullfill the void and add some 'flair' to your hump day.

Peace out,

Time

By Mike Daly
September 14th, 2003

Time sucks. I have no time. If I wasn't burdened with the unavoidable obstacle of everyone else's solar circadian cycles I would live through at least 36 hour days. As it stands I have to constantly put up with 4 hours of sleep just because the idiot that designed daytime didn't make it big enough.

Sorry I've been so busy recently that I haven't updated a lot. I am a little busy, but not so much that I can't write a little rant for you: I present Time. Someday I'll have some cool new art to show you. Also, I'm spending a lot of time on project sunburn, so some new screenshots might trickle into the game dev gallery over the next while.

Thats all, I'm hittin' it.

Not a day passes

By Mike Daly
September 16th, 2003

that I'm not able to remind myself of my incorrigible stupidity. For example, Monday night I stayed up too late (specifically all night and the next day) procrastinating from my homework, as I am prone to do. Just last night, I had the brilliance to top that by doing it again. Of course tonight, I didn't even have pressing homework, I stayed up all night simply because I'm irresponsible.

I just realized that I have to eat breakfast fast if I want to catch the crappy CAT bus, so I'm going to have to bring this little update to a close quickly.

Basically, what's going on in my life is now I live with 3 other people instead of one. When you would think this would make it easier to update the page regularly becuase you have more people who want to do it, this is not the case. Actually, we are all more prone to expect someone else to do it now that there are four of us, and updating becomes more difficult. Since I'm limited on time, I can't bring any reasonable meaning to this post.

At least you know I'm alive.

And the award goes to ...

By Mike Daly
September 18th, 2003

Wastrel. Congratulations, on your remembering to post today. More specifically, forgetting to post today within five minutes of when you said you would. It takes a lot.

Wastrel breaks in:
To my defense Willow is a poop head. So there!!! =P
Well I did kind of forget, but what I really forgot was the site to actually put the post up. Although it is quite simple, its the simple things in life that we take for granted (i.e. FORGET). And therefore your beloved post comes in a whopping 13 hours late (although technically I would have posted at 3am so therefore only 10 hours late).
Now enough excuses back to Willows lame post! --->

On the bright side, at least any peoples out there are learning a little more about your personality.

In conclusion, I like Smash Brothers, and I'm pretty good at it too. We should have some sort of tournament.

visithomestarrunner

Wastrel Saves the Day yet again
To add some actually content to this post and have some cool stuff for you guys I found some pictures up from the ice storm that were in bad format and now are good and visible under the miscellaneous section (I could have posted each pic, but sorry thats where my 'personality/identity/name/insert your slash word here' comes in).

On another note about a month ago we three monkeys went to the lake, celebrating both Willow's Birthday and Labor Day, while Wayne was down in South Carolina, and some of the resulting movies are quite funny, neat, and cool. Also here is me and Willow trying to Land on the tube. If you average our tries we would have definetly succeeded. But Willow went too far and I came up a little short!.

So enjoy your weekends, signing off

There's a reason you have to be 21 to drink...

By
September 21st, 2003

It's because you can't afford to go out until you're at least 23, so they only give you 2 years to go into serious debt.

This weekend was the big celebration of Wastrel and Willow's 21st birthdays. First we went to Rum Runners (and paid a $5 cover I might add) to hang out with old people. It wasn't a total loss, but I think I'll wait a decade before making it a frequent visit.

Then we headed to Pantana Bob's, but the line was 50 people long, it was already crowded inside, and it was getting late. So, we walked across the street to East Village, a much younger crowd than downtown. And much cheaper I might add; I can't afford to pay $5 to get in and then $3.50 for a beer.

Anyway, I won't spill all the beans because Wastrel might want to have a little dignity, but I will post this picture out of the few we took. And of course, following two movies. Sorry for the huge file size, crappy quality, no sound; and most of all Quicktime, but what can you expect from a camera made for snapshots, not video.

Here is Wastrel attempting to drink a flaming shot (the flame is blue, so it's hard to see, but I'm sure you can tell how hot it is from his reaction). This second video shows the color of the flame to let you know how hot it was. I think this stuff is more potent than gasoline.

That's all for tonight, I have to get a decent night of sleep to get rid of this cold. No time for sleep the rest of the week because I have 3 tests, a presentation due next Monday, and tons of work since Isabel messed up the power Thursday night (I was at work 5 long hours Friday night, it sucked).

Maybe Wastrel can post the recipe for his yummy pasta dish we had tonight. I'll make him put it up for Wednesday.

September 23rd, 2003

Well, i've been absent from the update scene for a while so i thought i'd pop back in to remind you all that i am still alive. i only have one thing of interest for you today. here is Wayne being manly! (and Willow being girly) there is no shortage of entertainment in this house.

ok, so actually the reason this update sucks is because i have no idea what i'm doing. everybody already went to bed, leaving me to do the update all by myself! i don't know anything about this stuff. lets hope i did it all right so they don't call me names tomorrow. see you all next month! (the next time i'll probably get around to doing the update, assuming they even let me do it at all.)

ps: battlefield earth is not my favorite movie (although it was funny. damn funny).

Times past

By Mike Daly
September 25th, 2003

Whilst browsing our site earlier this week, I randomly went back and read the updates from an earlier month (specifically, April, 2003) and noticed a significant difference in how I approached the site.

I seemed so much happier then, I was genuinely enthusiastic about updating, I had interesting things to say, and I always seemed to be working on something neat that I could post.

Nowadays, all the stuff I sink my time into isn't stuff that I can post. It's not stuff I necessarily enjoy doing, either, which is quite depressing. But, complaints aside, I did get to do a little modeling recently, so I've come up with some screenshots of my latest partially-complete character model.

Keep in mind, it still needs a lot of work: model tweaking, textures, a big-time poly reduction, and rigging. Someday I'll finish it. Maybe. Oh right, I still should post a link. Try this out.

Yeah, I know it's not great, but you're lucky to get that considering what I've been through recently. In fact, the only reason I have time to update is because I'm pulling another all-nighter. I have a major graphics program due tommorrow and I haven't started yet, but this time It's for a slew of valid reasons; not just the fact that I didn't want to do it, as it usually is. One of the reasons might have to do with the fact that I have 3 english classes at once right now, and english is my natural enemy.

Well, enough whining. I'm going to let you all off on that. Enjoy your fridays, and if you are a cool guy, enjoy the State UNC game; I know we will.

Personal Record

By Mike Daly
September 28th, 2003

We had a lot of fun this weekend, those of us, at least, who could comprehend their surroundings (more on that later). For those of you who live with their heads stuck in a gopher hole, the NC State vs. Chapel Hill football game was saturday. If the condition for you not knowing that was true, you must also not have known that NC State STOMPED them.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Fortunately, for those of you who were not able to attend the great event, we have captured some pictures. Just as proof here is all of us in order, Wastrel, Wesley, and Willow. Here is the grand stadium itself, filled with over fifty three thousand fans. The energy of an event like this really is mind-boggling sometimes. If you want to see more of the game's pictures (and with properly sized windows), you can check them out in the 'miscellaneous' gallery.

Now, to touch on the title, and the refrence earlier to dimmed consciousness, I'd like to point out a personal record I recently achieved. As any regular reader is familiar with, I have a problem with going to bed on time (tonight being no exception: 3:00am currently). You also may have noticed me complaining about this past week while it was still going on. Yeah, I had a lot of stuff to do last week. More than I could handle in a normal day, that's why I invented the "Super-Day": my solution to the limiting daily cycle of toil before sleep.

The Super Day:

The Super Day is a magical time where you have an extra 30% of your time free because you forgo a useless, draining, mindless activity. During the Super Day you can do things like go to class all day twice, go to a football game, write a research paper from scratch, not finish an opengl program from scratch, play a game of Age of Mythology, and inadvertantly pick your nose about 2,301 times. Sounds great, huh? I wish I had those every day. Oh yeah, before I forget, there is another detail about the day I forgot to mention: IT'S 63 HOURS LONG!

Yep, that's what my selfish pursuit of academics and entertainment won me this week, a personal record for awaken-ness. I should hire someone to kick me in the nuts if I ever do this again, but since I don't have that much money, I guess I'll just have to do it again sometime before I graduate.

Enough babble, I have a lot of sleep to catch up on (grumble).

The eternal battle

By Mike Daly
September 30th, 2003

I am constatly locked with myself in an eternal debate. On the one hand, I wish to update this site regularly so that the few people who visit the site have at least something new to read when they get bored of their salary jobs each day at about 9 o'clock am. On the other hand, if I am not able to do something in the span of two days that is worthy of significant note, my posts will become repetetive and whiney, with nothing interesting to them. That, and the fact that Wayne beats me horribly every time I do it.

Of course, in a utopian world, I could generate cool content and have something to talk about every update. But as we all know, this is as impossible as having your cake and eating it too. So, what should I do in response to this dillemma?

I can't really think of a broad, continuing solution, but for now, I'm just going to say this: Everyone in Raleigh must come to the guest speakers on campus tonight! The Game Developer's Club is hosting 3 guest speakers from a local game middleware company (NDL), and we need a really good turnout. It's in the witherspoon cinema, details here.

I'm exploring so many new possibilities for the game developers club recently, and I'm extremely excited about it. I wish I could tell you all, but that would bore you, and I'd rather wait until we have the events set in stone.

That's all. Begone.

Whats up

By
October 2nd, 2003

Howdy folks. It's early Friday morning and I'm about to go to bed, but first I'm going to make this little update and read some novel.

So I wrote a rant earlier tonight, but it's not really so much of a rant per se. You'll have to read it and figure out what it is.

I also posted a new topic in the message board about the upcoming movies section of this site. Please read it and give me input, so I can possibly do some work this weekend on it.

That's all for now. My bed is calling. Happy Friday everyone!

I sank to the level of a preteen

By Wastrel
October 5th, 2003

Hey, so its sunday night, we all have work out the bum, and well we didn't get much of anything accomplished this weekend. Although Sleep is quite an accomplishment, and I definetly caught up on that (especially with random naps which were not planned and just took precious hours out of a good day).

Anyway the point of this post is that last week I watched 'A Knight's Tale,' on my own without female companionship, and of my own free will as well. Yes I realize my utter stupidity. And so here is my Reflection on the modern 'classic'.

The only mistake I admit to was believing my female friends in that it is good and not listening to my gut instinct of movie stupidity.
Anyway the comic will be coming soon I have more work to do so...
-peace out

Sleep is for wimps

By
October 7th, 2003

I have began a new day with no sleep. Even after a hard night's work when I thought I was going to pass out from exaustion (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). But alas, here I am, English paper in hand (err, to be printed soon) waiting for the oven to preheat so I can enjoy some Flaky Layers Grands Biscuits along with scrambled eggs. It's almost worth staying up for.

I'm sure I'll disagree with that last statement in about 2 hours. Since I've been busy with this paper, the only update I have for today is my story of staying up all night and of course, the movie exchange. If you haven't heard about it, visit the message board and take a look. Currently there are 138 movies in the database and the potential for hundreds more if you guys participate. Email me if you want to sign up and I'll create an account for you.

Have a great hump day! I'll be passing out in approx. 6 hours until it's time to go to work.

Scary Monkeys

By
October 12th, 2003

Boo! It's Halloween! I had this grand idea of putting the website in style and changed all the blue to orange. Yes, I know that's a horrible drawing up there in the top left corner, but if enough of you vote it out, I'm sure Willow would take the time to make some half decent looking ones (I made the ugly one).

I think we'll be doing this on a regular basis for major holidays. I'll spend more time on making Christmas' theme look better. I'll even throw in a manora and a black Santa to celebrate diversity.

Or not. Anyway, that's all for now because my fall break was anything but a break. I made the website change colors and that should be enough for all of you. If not, then I politely request for all of you to kiss my behind.

Thank you and goodnight.

I've got something yummy in my tummy

By Wastrel
October 14th, 2003

So the update itself will be short, or rather nevermind I'll tell a little story about today and make it longer. Muhahaha....

So my research professor lectured me again today about how I should leave my options open for the future. So that I may spend precious money and time to apply to grad schools, in the unlikely (or maybe likely who knows) event that if I don't get a good job I still have grad school as an option. But if I find the job of my dreams then I can still turn them down. Now this is good and all, and she actually did badger me enough until she convinced me, but the freakin' deadlines are in december. I have to now take GRE's, fill out applications, worry about teacher recs, and the lot. You know, all this, while trying to graduate, and find a part time job, is a pain in the butt.
Anyway just thought I would inform the world that I am at the breaking point of my life where one simple decision either ruins it or seals the deal.

Anyway the boys were nagging me to put a receipe of a Hungarian dish I make often since its soooo incredibly simple (easier than Spaghetti). And so without further ado I present to you Turos Teszta, literally meaning Cottage Cheese Pasta. Its good try it before you knock it.

The mad content

By Mike Daly
October 16th, 2003

Consider yourselves lucky this friday. Us here at the dueling monkeys have been considerate enough to translate little snippets of our life into an amazing digital format for your viewing pleasure. I will divide this update into 3 parts, because we just have that much crazy content today.

First up, Wayne took the time to bring some truths to light in his recent rant concerning Jiffy Lube. In my opinion, he was lenient on them, but I guess it would be foolish to believe that everyone who patronizes their hole gets the same problems that I do. I don't want to get started on Jiffy Lube, but I'm just going to say it took 3 entra trips to Jiffy Lube for them to fix the problems they created on the first.

Jerks.

Secondly, credit for this next item goes to wesley. He brought his cool little japanese digital camera to the climbing wall with us this past weekend, and we were able to capture some of it in the form of short quicktime movies. I hope you enjoy them. First is yours truly performing a dynamic climbing maneuver! Man, that's fun stuff. Then we have Wesley performing the same move. Then me managing a difficult traversal. Isn't it cool? Yes!

And just to point out how that first move is actually really easy and not dangerous at all, I have this, but don't tell anyone.

Thirdly and finally, we come to what I've been working on. As you can see in my modeling and game dev galleries, I have an interest in 3d modeling for games. I haven't added to the galleries in a while, but that is not to mean I haven't been working. To remedy the lack of content, however, I finally finished up the important points of a new character model for project sunburn. Now you can see her in all her glory.

Well, that might not be ALL her glory, but you'll never know, will you? Muah-hahahaha!

More than enough stuff for one day. Now get you to the messageboard and waste some more time.

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet.

By Mike Daly
October 19th, 2003

Let me point out something before I make this update. We update on monday, wednesday, and friday. (most of the time) Which means when we go to post monday, the last post was on friday. To draw the chain of causality out further, this means that the days in between posts are friday, saturday, and sunday. What on earth could motivate us to do real work on any of those days?

Now that thats out of the way, we can move on to the excuses phase. First of all, I'm the one to puts crappy updates with no content up all the time because I'm the only one that pays attention when everybody else forgets to post because we have no new content, so I have to post to remind you that we are all still here and functioning.

That was a pretty good excuse, I think. I should have gone with my backup and saved that one for later, like when we have had lame posts for a few days. As it stands, with all the stuff we added friday, we all deserve a little time off, so this lame post is completely valid.

Natrually, the only one of us doing significant work on something that concerns the internet community is Wayne. And he has been busy at work, like a little dwarf mining out php nuggets from html mountain. For those of you it concerns, he has updated the slim, pretty Dueling monkeys media(?) exchange!. Check out how pretty it is!

No lame post is complete without a random link in the place of real content, so therefore, I give you your reading for the day: The Street Fighter Pilot Cannon Guide, and extensive listing of the backstory surrounding the various characters in the street fighter universe. There are some very interesting things to be found there for one who is vaugely familiar with the characters, and has a lot of time on their hands.

update *post = &monday;

By Mike Daly
October 21st, 2003

For an explanation of today's post, see monday's post. Does nobody else care? I'm begining to think so. I can't say I'm doing much either so I won't complain.

Here we are, the highlite of your day: the random link. First some introduction: if you have speakers and winamp, you should be in good shape for this one. Ever since I started listening to their music, I've been addicted to them. You may not like it, but a little variety never hurt the palete (unless you are a sissy like Wastrel).

Without further ramble, I present Guitar Vader!

So Willow will not like the fact that while he plays the devil game, I am posting. Muhahaha.... NO rambling from him this time, and no more complaining about his cool roommates normal desire to eat GOOD FOOD!!!

Alors... for the content that I must post for me not to get b..complained to. Here is Willow's Cooking Creations, a picture of his bday cake from a while back, and last but not least... Willow attempting to be cool.

Well it's been a long tiring day/night for me so... peace out folks.

I hate doing this

By
October 26th, 2003

and by this, I do of course mean posting for no reason other than moving the last horrible useless news post down the list. I'm really sorry. I have plenty of excuses though.

Let me count them:
1) I went home this weekend for my grandmother's birthday
2) Afterwards, I went to a halloween thing with some of my family whom I don't see but a few times a year.
3) Today I had to drive back to Raleigh, go to a movie (Scary Movie 3), come home and watch 2 movies at the same time (Dogma and Alien Ressurection were on TV), and then play some video games of course.

So you see, I really had a busy weekend. And tommorow I have to go to work an hour and a half early because we are getting ready for Christmas season already. I also can't do much with this site or the movies site until I get this new one looking good and more importantly working correctly for the Game Developers Club. I hope we don't get sued by you-know-who because of the suggestiveness of the links and such at the top. I know if it were my company then I'd be happy that someone still loved me even though that since those games were released my market share had dropped like a MA241 student's GPA.

Anyway, Willow has scanned another drawing and requested some input on a color scheme. So take a look at the black and white picture and post any suggestions here. Your comments are either much appreciated or suck. You can probably tell which based on Willow's suttle, yet hinting replies at how he now hates you.

software engineering, my inherent lack of time, Jiffy Lube ...

By Mike Daly
November 2nd, 2003

and now this semester. These are things that hurt me so much to think about that it infuriates me. Every time one of them comes to mind, my mind fills with rage. Why have the cruel fates allowed such things into my life?

I don't like using this site as an avenue for constant complaints, but this morning I feel the need to vent, so get ready to endure it.

I now hate school. I wish to do almost anything to get out of it. Anything that doesn't involve the brutal sacrifice of my own career. Specifically, I hate english classes. I have three this semester. I hate english. I also hate my cranky old opinionated bastard graphics teacher. I could have enjoyed the class if you had been a nice guy and died before I took it.

In the past week, I have had to pull three all-nighters out of necessity for schoolwork. In addition to that, I didn't even get my work finished, so I have the added stress of finishing a paper and a program to minimize their late-ness.

To summarize, I feel the way I look in this awful picture.

Okay, sorry for all that depressing-ness. The Dueling Monkeys household held a little gathering for Halloween, which was a decent success. In honor of our own greatness, we added some pictures of the event to a new gallery: Halloween 2003. Yeah, it's cool. I was the man until I remembered how much work I didn't finish beforehand.

In other news, for those of you it concerns, Wayne has fixed up the crazy movies exchange so that you can edit the movies you have already added, so Mr. Muffin can go back and fix all of those horrible spelling errors if he feels so inclined. Wayne has also been busy making the new Game Developer's Club webpage function. Although Wayne takes credit for creating all of the original code that makes it tick, I can claim responsibility for stealing the graphics from some obscure video game, which will no doubt NOT get me in legal trouble with an evil, international super-corporation.

Yikes. This is a horrible update. I guess I'd better bring it to a close before it gets any worse.

ciao

Interesting things happening lately

By Mike Daly
November 5th, 2003

Last night, I found my self staring at my alarm clock thinking: "I'm going to get six hours of sleep tonight! Awesome!" Then I climbed up into my bed and saw that it was neatly made. This caused me to think a bit because I do not normally (read: ever) make my bed.

We had a Halloween get together last friday. Friday night (/saturday morning) I went to bed after trying to wash all of my makeup off, but I didn't manage to get it all off, so I made a big, red, mess all over my sheets. I washed my sheets the next day and made my bed with them when they were done.

The implication here is that I did not get to sleep in my own bed from then until last night. Why, you might ask? Because I didn't get to sleep. Over the past seven days, I've only gotten 3 nights of sleep. It has been one hellish nightmare, but I think it's almost over.

I'm happy now that I can sleep at night (despite the fact that I still hate sleeping), and I'm sure you'll be seeing the result of that relief and happiness in the form of art or modeling or a video or something up on the webpage soon. As it stands, I haven't done anything in the immediate past, so for this reason, I will give you a (cop out) link.

Here it is, folks, your moment of zen.

Another date, another update

By Mike Daly
November 6th, 2003

Hi guys. It's friday and, as usual, nobody has anything worth updating, so I'm here to post a picture, and some random useless link good for nothing but killing time. But that is why you came here in the first place, right? I thought so too.

So Wayne and I were looking through this little computer catalog to see what they had on sale. In their little catalog, Dell showed a diagram of all the states that had Dell stores at malls. Take a look at it, and pay close attention to the states that matter. Dell's view of the US.

It's nice to know that a big company like Dell is not so rigid that it gets bogged down by minor details like, say, the location of states.

For my random link today, check out The Art of Hyung Taekim. That guy is freakin awesome.

Weekend activities

By Mike Daly
November 9th, 2003

It's monday morning, and once again, I have to come up with some sort of excuse for not making content over the weekend. Fortunately, this time it's going to be damned easy because I had a jam-packed weekend full of crazy.

This past weekend, at NC State University, Epic held Unreal University. Due to my affiliation with the NC State Game Developer's Club, I was a student volunteer for the event. Basically what this means is I got to go for free, but in return had to monitor a lab that was PLAYING UNREAL TOURNAMENT 2004 ON A LAN ALL DAY! Muah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Let me tell you a little about 2k4. When 2k3 first came out, I was disapointed because it felt like I was playing quake, and I don't like quake. After a while, I got used to it, and now I like it. However, from the moment I layed hands on it, I loved every bit of 2k4. They have two new game types that will make you throw deathmatch and capture the flag right out the window. I played for hours and hours and still couldn't get enough.

The second wave of enthusiasm came when I attended the seminars and saw how easy it was to create your own vehicles for 2k4. I've already started on a model, and I hope to get it done before the game ships, so everyone cand get a kickin off-road superbike the day the game comes out.

No pictures, no articles, you know what that means: random link time.

I'm the only one

By
November 11th, 2003

who does any real updating around here. I sat down, at 2 am, to make another useless update like our boy Willow, but then thought: "No, I won't do it. I'm sure there's something I've cooked recently, or maybe I've had a bad day, or I drew a picture while I was bored."

Sure enough, I found some way to update the webpage with meaning. Also, I have two important news announcments.

1) The site will once again be down because we are moving it to a new server. This will be the last time for a while. Someone has so graciously offered us free space and bandwidth, so we're going to take it.

2) For those of you who want to go on this cruise in March, I'm about to sign up for vacation time at work, so as soon as I get my spot reserved I'm going to be making reservations. Where do you guys want to go? I've been to the Bahamas twice but wouldn't be against going again. The carribean sounds nice, and some of those swing by Mexico for a day if you're interested. Somebody make a thread in the message board and everyone reply with your suggestions, requests, links to good deals, etc. I may end up contacting a travel agent to see if they can help. The cruise industry is hurting right now so we should be able to get some good deals. Also, who's going? The cost could run anywhere from $500 to $1000 including airfare, the cruise (meals included, but not drinks, not even a coke. tea is free though), and island expenditures. But obviously you could spend a lot more than that if you were so inclined. Let me know.

They mystery of the dissapearing monkey

By Wesley
November 11th, 2003

and here you are, a mystery update! yes, those hardy boys would love this. so where has our beloved Wesley Monkey been all this time? here's your first clue, it starts with H and ends in ELL. 'school work thats more than two weeks overdue hell' that is (its inbetween the 3rd and 4th levels of regular hell). in fact, he's still there now. maybe someday he will escape, but the future looks bleak.

and why is he writing in the third person you might ask? because he is dictating this message to me, Procrast Inate, Lord of the Evil Research Paper, while he is weeping like a little school girl over a pile of books (the weeping might also be a result of me rubbing lemon juice in his eyes, muahahahaha...). so let this be a lesson to ye! do your papers on time (or pay someone else to do them for you on time), or you will be spending time with ME!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......

oh, and check out Procrast's Empty Fridge Special for a new cooking idea! and to all of you who are no longer in school, feel free to ridicule Wesley, poor tortured soul that he is.

Sunburn

By Mike Daly
November 13th, 2003

Hey everyone! After many trials and tribulations, I've finally completed(?) a game mod. Let me tell you, it will be nice to have this off my shoulders. I might even be able to finish coloring that picture I started a while back now.

For those that are interested, I've posted some pretty little screenshots in the Game Dev gallery. You can see the recent ones at the bottom, only the last five are final version.

For those that are more interested and, more importantly, own a copy of UT2k3, you can actually download the MOD itself from here. Exciting, huh? I can't testify as to the 'coolness' factor of this one, but the theme we went with is what the funding dictated.

For those that are not interested, piss off.

And for everyone in the world, I'd like to congratulate Wayne and I on our first year aniversery of running Dueling Monkeys! (Applause) We've both had a great time with it, and I'm really glad he talked me into it.

I was supposed to do something for the aniversery like draw some new pictures for the top corner, but I didn't have time. Sorry. Since our first year goals of getting the site up have been accomplished, we can now set our goals for the next year. I personally hope that within the next year, we can make the site something valuable in some way to someone; a pretty ambitious goal, I know, but assuming I get out of college this spring, I think I just might be able to do it.

Looks like somebody has a case of the mondays.

By Mike Daly
November 16th, 2003

Hi guys. So I stayed up all night last night. This time I was supposed to be reading an article about magical realism. Normally, I don't read any assignments, so why I chose to try to read this one is beyond my comprehension. To baffle things more, it was a long, boring article that I couldn't make sense of anyway. I guess you could say that the real reason I stayed up was so that I could read webcomics.

And that brings me to my next point: you all should do yourselves a favor and check out Mac Hall if you haven't already. Like many mediocre to poor webcomics, it tells the story of some dissafected college students who want to make webcomics and have an obsession with video games. Unlike the aforementioned crap webcomics, this one does it very well with a nice graphical style, a decent sense of humor, and making very relevant points to my own life.

I may catch some flak for this next one, but I really love this other webcomic I found entitled The 10K Commotion. It's a little wierd because it deals entirely with Dance Dance Revolution, which I'm not so sure all of you are familiar with, and it deals with it to a level of fanatasism that I'm sure none of you are familiar with.

Right, while I was busy burning the buns in the toaster oven last night, Wayne was busy grilling up some burgers, and more importantly, making some Homeade Fries. These were awesome, I can't believe we hadn't tried them before. They are easy to make, too, if it weren't for the life-threatening jumping oil beans. That didn't make any sense.

Right, so I guess that's all I have to say for now. Bye-bye.

Finally, a short break

By
November 23rd, 2003

After a week of crappyness, I think that this next week will be a well deserved break from the usual. No tests, only 2 days of class, only 3 days of work, I'm liking the looks of my schedule.

This weekend I bought Dave Matthews Band's Central Park Concert DVD. It's great; if you like DMB at all, you'll enjoy this. It's in PCM Stereo and Dolby 5.1. Only downside is that it's DVD only and doesn't really provide an easy way to listen to it in your car or stereo, but I'm working on that.

On the agenda for Christmas break is the completion of the DM Movie Exchange which will also include a Games list (per request of Mr. Muffin) and will be programmed with a fully customizable interface using the Smarty Template Engine for PHP. You'll have to at least read the crash course they provide to be able to customize the way your site looks. But don't worry, I'll obviously have a default layout similar to the current one and a very generic template to help get you started. I'm not too sure on how easy I can make it to customize yet as I have not yet even begun to learn to use Smarty.

If you are bored or just want to play around with it some, visit the above site and see about making your own layout for the site. It would help me get motivated to do it if I knew someone was going to use it. Either way I'm probably going to do it because I want to. Eventually (maybe over the break) I'll do this site too, so we can change it for whatever reason easily.

Tommorow (read:today) I'm going to call about the cruise and get things rolling. I'll post in this thread as soon as I get some information.

Alright folks, I think I did a pretty good job of decieving you into thinking this update was good by filling it with lots of words and links, but if not, oh well!

The final stretch of the semester ...

By Mike Daly
November 30th, 2003

is upon us. This means that I only have one semester to go before I am free of school forever. More specifically, free from english. I never have to take an english class again as of one week from today. Hooray!

I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving. Enjoy those leftovers. I know that I had a good break, it was just what I needed to get my spirits up. I'm probably going to get a new computer soon, so that should be awesome. I'm not sure if that will mean I will want to spend more time playing with 3d studio and photoshop (now that they are faster) or just playing more games (because they are prettier). Either way, I'm going to be happier.

I'm working a bit on my motorcycle model (for UT2k4), but it won't be ready for a very long time. I'll let you know when I get anything in the gallery. However, I did dig up some old models I've been meaning to put in the modeling gallery: behold, the heads.

Very Excited

By Mike Daly
December 5th, 2003

The computer I have been using for the past year-and-a-half was a spare of Wayne's. The reason this was necessary is that my computer is five years old. The poor old lass just doesn't have it in her anymore.

Now Wayne's old computer must prepare itself for abandonment, because, at long last, I have aquired a new computer.

I'm so happy with it, I almost can't contain myself! Let's see what we have here, in ascending order of interest:
  • Black 350W case (w/ front usb 2.0)
  • Black Samsung DVD-ROM (supposed to be very quiet)
  • Asus nForce2 motherboard (integrated 6 channel sound), with 400 mhz fsb
  • 512 mb Corsair RAM (400 mhz)
  • Seagate 120G HD w/ 8 mb cache (7200 RPM)
  • AMD Athlon XP 2600+
  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128 mb
The graphics card is my favorite part. nVidia and ATI are so busy trying to prove that their directX 9 support is the best that they are putting out all sorts of tech demos showing off all sorts of things my kick@$$ card can do. Not to mention benchmarking programs that I've been hunting down like a hawk.

I did make up some screen shots with UT2k3 running with every setting maxed out, but I wasn't able to connect to our ftp server to upload the pics. Oh well, the screenshots don't do it justice anyway.

I'm going to download more stuff now!

Closed for the holidays

In case you didn't notice, our terribly informative and relevant updates have been kind of scarce lately. There is a perfectly good explanation for this. Finals. Preparing for finals, taking finals, stressing about the rest of the finals, taking more finals, celebrating completing finals, etc.

After the post-final celebration, I basically just played a lot of video games. In my vegitative state, I just didn't think to update the page, nor did I bother with hastling anybody else to update it for me.

That explains it for the past few weeks. Now to explain why we probably won't be doing it for a while again.

Dueling Monkeys will be temporarily in hibernation for the holidays. Fear not, we will be back come January, but we'll probably be too busy playing with christmas toys to have any real content with us. Either way, expect hijinx and hilarity.

I suppose that so this whole post isn't a complete waste of your time, I will post a funny video courtesy of master Morimoto: Mario Brothers 3 TIME ATTACK!
