software engineering, my inherent lack of time, Jiffy Lube ...

By Mike Daly

and now this semester. These are things that hurt me so much to think about that it infuriates me. Every time one of them comes to mind, my mind fills with rage. Why have the cruel fates allowed such things into my life?

I don't like using this site as an avenue for constant complaints, but this morning I feel the need to vent, so get ready to endure it.

I now hate school. I wish to do almost anything to get out of it. Anything that doesn't involve the brutal sacrifice of my own career. Specifically, I hate english classes. I have three this semester. I hate english. I also hate my cranky old opinionated bastard graphics teacher. I could have enjoyed the class if you had been a nice guy and died before I took it.

In the past week, I have had to pull three all-nighters out of necessity for schoolwork. In addition to that, I didn't even get my work finished, so I have the added stress of finishing a paper and a program to minimize their late-ness.

To summarize, I feel the way I look in this awful picture.

Okay, sorry for all that depressing-ness. The Dueling Monkeys household held a little gathering for Halloween, which was a decent success. In honor of our own greatness, we added some pictures of the event to a new gallery: Halloween 2003. Yeah, it's cool. I was the man until I remembered how much work I didn't finish beforehand.

In other news, for those of you it concerns, Wayne has fixed up the crazy movies exchange so that you can edit the movies you have already added, so Mr. Muffin can go back and fix all of those horrible spelling errors if he feels so inclined. Wayne has also been busy making the new Game Developer's Club webpage function. Although Wayne takes credit for creating all of the original code that makes it tick, I can claim responsibility for stealing the graphics from some obscure video game, which will no doubt NOT get me in legal trouble with an evil, international super-corporation.

Yikes. This is a horrible update. I guess I'd better bring it to a close before it gets any worse.

ciao

Interesting things happening lately

By Mike Daly
November 5th, 2003

Last night, I found my self staring at my alarm clock thinking: "I'm going to get six hours of sleep tonight! Awesome!" Then I climbed up into my bed and saw that it was neatly made. This caused me to think a bit because I do not normally (read: ever) make my bed.

We had a Halloween get together last friday. Friday night (/saturday morning) I went to bed after trying to wash all of my makeup off, but I didn't manage to get it all off, so I made a big, red, mess all over my sheets. I washed my sheets the next day and made my bed with them when they were done.

The implication here is that I did not get to sleep in my own bed from then until last night. Why, you might ask? Because I didn't get to sleep. Over the past seven days, I've only gotten 3 nights of sleep. It has been one hellish nightmare, but I think it's almost over.

I'm happy now that I can sleep at night (despite the fact that I still hate sleeping), and I'm sure you'll be seeing the result of that relief and happiness in the form of art or modeling or a video or something up on the webpage soon. As it stands, I haven't done anything in the immediate past, so for this reason, I will give you a (cop out) link.

Here it is, folks, your moment of zen.

Another date, another update

By Mike Daly
November 6th, 2003

Hi guys. It's friday and, as usual, nobody has anything worth updating, so I'm here to post a picture, and some random useless link good for nothing but killing time. But that is why you came here in the first place, right? I thought so too.

So Wayne and I were looking through this little computer catalog to see what they had on sale. In their little catalog, Dell showed a diagram of all the states that had Dell stores at malls. Take a look at it, and pay close attention to the states that matter. Dell's view of the US.

It's nice to know that a big company like Dell is not so rigid that it gets bogged down by minor details like, say, the location of states.

For my random link today, check out The Art of Hyung Taekim. That guy is freakin awesome.

Weekend activities

By Mike Daly
November 9th, 2003

It's monday morning, and once again, I have to come up with some sort of excuse for not making content over the weekend. Fortunately, this time it's going to be damned easy because I had a jam-packed weekend full of crazy.

This past weekend, at NC State University, Epic held Unreal University. Due to my affiliation with the NC State Game Developer's Club, I was a student volunteer for the event. Basically what this means is I got to go for free, but in return had to monitor a lab that was PLAYING UNREAL TOURNAMENT 2004 ON A LAN ALL DAY! Muah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Let me tell you a little about 2k4. When 2k3 first came out, I was disapointed because it felt like I was playing quake, and I don't like quake. After a while, I got used to it, and now I like it. However, from the moment I layed hands on it, I loved every bit of 2k4. They have two new game types that will make you throw deathmatch and capture the flag right out the window. I played for hours and hours and still couldn't get enough.

The second wave of enthusiasm came when I attended the seminars and saw how easy it was to create your own vehicles for 2k4. I've already started on a model, and I hope to get it done before the game ships, so everyone cand get a kickin off-road superbike the day the game comes out.

No pictures, no articles, you know what that means: random link time.

I'm the only one

By
November 11th, 2003

who does any real updating around here. I sat down, at 2 am, to make another useless update like our boy Willow, but then thought: "No, I won't do it. I'm sure there's something I've cooked recently, or maybe I've had a bad day, or I drew a picture while I was bored."

Sure enough, I found some way to update the webpage with meaning. Also, I have two important news announcments.

1) The site will once again be down because we are moving it to a new server. This will be the last time for a while. Someone has so graciously offered us free space and bandwidth, so we're going to take it.

2) For those of you who want to go on this cruise in March, I'm about to sign up for vacation time at work, so as soon as I get my spot reserved I'm going to be making reservations. Where do you guys want to go? I've been to the Bahamas twice but wouldn't be against going again. The carribean sounds nice, and some of those swing by Mexico for a day if you're interested. Somebody make a thread in the message board and everyone reply with your suggestions, requests, links to good deals, etc. I may end up contacting a travel agent to see if they can help. The cruise industry is hurting right now so we should be able to get some good deals. Also, who's going? The cost could run anywhere from $500 to $1000 including airfare, the cruise (meals included, but not drinks, not even a coke. tea is free though), and island expenditures. But obviously you could spend a lot more than that if you were so inclined. Let me know.

They mystery of the dissapearing monkey

By Wesley
November 11th, 2003

and here you are, a mystery update! yes, those hardy boys would love this. so where has our beloved Wesley Monkey been all this time? here's your first clue, it starts with H and ends in ELL. 'school work thats more than two weeks overdue hell' that is (its inbetween the 3rd and 4th levels of regular hell). in fact, he's still there now. maybe someday he will escape, but the future looks bleak.

and why is he writing in the third person you might ask? because he is dictating this message to me, Procrast Inate, Lord of the Evil Research Paper, while he is weeping like a little school girl over a pile of books (the weeping might also be a result of me rubbing lemon juice in his eyes, muahahahaha...). so let this be a lesson to ye! do your papers on time (or pay someone else to do them for you on time), or you will be spending time with ME!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......

oh, and check out Procrast's Empty Fridge Special for a new cooking idea! and to all of you who are no longer in school, feel free to ridicule Wesley, poor tortured soul that he is.

Sunburn

By Mike Daly
November 13th, 2003

Hey everyone! After many trials and tribulations, I've finally completed(?) a game mod. Let me tell you, it will be nice to have this off my shoulders. I might even be able to finish coloring that picture I started a while back now.

For those that are interested, I've posted some pretty little screenshots in the Game Dev gallery. You can see the recent ones at the bottom, only the last five are final version.

For those that are more interested and, more importantly, own a copy of UT2k3, you can actually download the MOD itself from here. Exciting, huh? I can't testify as to the 'coolness' factor of this one, but the theme we went with is what the funding dictated.

For those that are not interested, piss off.

And for everyone in the world, I'd like to congratulate Wayne and I on our first year aniversery of running Dueling Monkeys! (Applause) We've both had a great time with it, and I'm really glad he talked me into it.

I was supposed to do something for the aniversery like draw some new pictures for the top corner, but I didn't have time. Sorry. Since our first year goals of getting the site up have been accomplished, we can now set our goals for the next year. I personally hope that within the next year, we can make the site something valuable in some way to someone; a pretty ambitious goal, I know, but assuming I get out of college this spring, I think I just might be able to do it.

Looks like somebody has a case of the mondays.

By Mike Daly
November 16th, 2003

Hi guys. So I stayed up all night last night. This time I was supposed to be reading an article about magical realism. Normally, I don't read any assignments, so why I chose to try to read this one is beyond my comprehension. To baffle things more, it was a long, boring article that I couldn't make sense of anyway. I guess you could say that the real reason I stayed up was so that I could read webcomics.

And that brings me to my next point: you all should do yourselves a favor and check out Mac Hall if you haven't already. Like many mediocre to poor webcomics, it tells the story of some dissafected college students who want to make webcomics and have an obsession with video games. Unlike the aforementioned crap webcomics, this one does it very well with a nice graphical style, a decent sense of humor, and making very relevant points to my own life.

I may catch some flak for this next one, but I really love this other webcomic I found entitled The 10K Commotion. It's a little wierd because it deals entirely with Dance Dance Revolution, which I'm not so sure all of you are familiar with, and it deals with it to a level of fanatasism that I'm sure none of you are familiar with.

Right, while I was busy burning the buns in the toaster oven last night, Wayne was busy grilling up some burgers, and more importantly, making some Homeade Fries. These were awesome, I can't believe we hadn't tried them before. They are easy to make, too, if it weren't for the life-threatening jumping oil beans. That didn't make any sense.

Right, so I guess that's all I have to say for now. Bye-bye.

Finally, a short break

By
November 23rd, 2003

After a week of crappyness, I think that this next week will be a well deserved break from the usual. No tests, only 2 days of class, only 3 days of work, I'm liking the looks of my schedule.

This weekend I bought Dave Matthews Band's Central Park Concert DVD. It's great; if you like DMB at all, you'll enjoy this. It's in PCM Stereo and Dolby 5.1. Only downside is that it's DVD only and doesn't really provide an easy way to listen to it in your car or stereo, but I'm working on that.

On the agenda for Christmas break is the completion of the DM Movie Exchange which will also include a Games list (per request of Mr. Muffin) and will be programmed with a fully customizable interface using the Smarty Template Engine for PHP. You'll have to at least read the crash course they provide to be able to customize the way your site looks. But don't worry, I'll obviously have a default layout similar to the current one and a very generic template to help get you started. I'm not too sure on how easy I can make it to customize yet as I have not yet even begun to learn to use Smarty.

If you are bored or just want to play around with it some, visit the above site and see about making your own layout for the site. It would help me get motivated to do it if I knew someone was going to use it. Either way I'm probably going to do it because I want to. Eventually (maybe over the break) I'll do this site too, so we can change it for whatever reason easily.

Tommorow (read:today) I'm going to call about the cruise and get things rolling. I'll post in this thread as soon as I get some information.

Alright folks, I think I did a pretty good job of decieving you into thinking this update was good by filling it with lots of words and links, but if not, oh well!

The final stretch of the semester ...

By Mike Daly
November 30th, 2003

is upon us. This means that I only have one semester to go before I am free of school forever. More specifically, free from english. I never have to take an english class again as of one week from today. Hooray!

I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving. Enjoy those leftovers. I know that I had a good break, it was just what I needed to get my spirits up. I'm probably going to get a new computer soon, so that should be awesome. I'm not sure if that will mean I will want to spend more time playing with 3d studio and photoshop (now that they are faster) or just playing more games (because they are prettier). Either way, I'm going to be happier.

I'm working a bit on my motorcycle model (for UT2k4), but it won't be ready for a very long time. I'll let you know when I get anything in the gallery. However, I did dig up some old models I've been meaning to put in the modeling gallery: behold, the heads.
